Black Caps outclass Bangladesh

Napier, Wednesday: Martin Guptill returned to form with an unbeaten century as New Zealand powered to an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first one-day international in Napier on Wednesday.

Bangladesh set New Zealand a modest run chase of 233 after suffering an early collapse and the Black Caps overhauled it in 44.3 overs, finishing at 233 for two.

It is Bangladesh’s fifth tour to New Zealand and they are yet to win a match in any format, with their next chance coming in the second ODI in Christchurch on Saturday.

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza said his team were adjusting to New Zealand conditions and still hoped of a breakthrough victory.

“We bowled well but we were struggling batting. We just lost too many wickets early,” he said.

Guptill and Henry Nicholls pressed their case to open the batting at the World Cup as New Zealand made light work of the target.

Guptill, returning from injury, put a poor run of scores behind him with a commanding 117 not out.

He had been averaging less than 10 since his last international innings of note, a big-hitting 138 against Sri Lanka in early January.

Guptill’s effort against Bangladesh was more controlled, with the batsman under no pressure and content to pick off loose deliveries.

His 15th ODI century came off 103 balls and included six fours and three sixes.

“Martin was brilliant, a fantastic hundred, and the contributions (from teammates) around that were really good as well,” Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson said.

Nicholls looked comfortable in just his third outing since being promoted up the order, scoring 53 before a tame dismissal when the ball hit his pad and rolled onto the stumps. AFP

Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera bats the ball during day 2 of the first test match between South Africa and Sri Lanka held at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban, on Thursday. AFP

Durban, Thursday: Dale Steyn and his fellow fast bowlers enabled South Africa to gain an advantage over Sri Lanka on the second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead in Durban on Thursday.

Steyn took four for 48 as South Africa took a first innings lead of 44. They stretched their lead to 170 by reaching 126 for four at the close.

South Africa’s decision to pick five specialist bowlers meant that their advantage was some way short of being decisive, with Faf du Plessis (25 not out) and Quinton de Kock (15 not out) their last two recognised batsmen going into day three.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 191 and were unable to build on a good first day when their inexperienced bowlers surprised the South African batsmen, who could manage only 235 in their first innings.

Steyn and Vernon Philander soon put their stamp on the game when Sri Lanka resumed at 49 for one on Thursday, taking three wickets in the first ten overs of the morning.

Kusal Perera played some bold and occasionally lucky strokes in making 51 off 63 balls for Sri Lanka and the hosts were frustrated when a barrage of short-pitched bowling could not break a stubborn ninth wicket partnership of 32, the joint second-highest of the innings, between debutant Lasith Embuldeniya and Kasun Rajitha.

It was particularly frustrating for Steyn, who bowled unchanged for a ten-over spell after lunch in a bid to claim the 27th five-wicket haul of his Test career.

He had already taken four wickets when Rajitha, on ten, gloved what looked a simple chance to Dean Elgar in the gully, only for the fielder to put it down.

The stand was eventually ended by a smart run-out of Rajitha by Aiden Markram at short leg.

Steyn took his career tally to 437 Test wickets, passing India’s Kapil Dev (434) and drawing level with Stuart Broad of England in joint seventh place on the all-time list.

With bright sunshine following the morning’s overcast conditions, the stage seemed set for South Africa to move into a commanding position as Markram struck the ball crisply in making 28 off 31 balls in an opening partnership of 36 with Elgar.

But Markram played one attacking shot too many when an attempted back foot force off Rajitha flew to Kusal Mendis at second slip.

Three more wickets fell reasonably cheaply as South Africa’s top-order batting again proved fragile.

Hashim Amla edged Vishwa Fernando to gully before Embuldeniya followed up his courageous innings of 24 off 63 balls by dismissing Temba Bavumgrabs advantage for south Africa and Elgar with his left-arm spin bowling.

Bavuma was leg before wicket for three when he missed a sweep and Elgar fell for 35 to a superb return catch when he skipped down the wicket and hit the ball hard but close enough for the bowler to take a reflex catch to his left. AFP

With newly elected SLC members
Sports Minister Harin Fernando
Sports Minister Harin Fernando

Sports Minister Harin Fernando yesterday said that he is looking forward to do some revolutionary changes in Sri Lanka Cricket together with the new board members who will be elected in the forthcoming election.

Minister Fernando also said that he does not want to interfere with SLC’s responsibilities and assured that he neither has personal or political agendas when dealing with issues related to SLC.

He also expressed his confidence that they would be able to hold SLC elections as planned at a press briefing held at the Sports Ministry yesterday.

“We take continuous legal counsel from Attorney General’s Department. Despite the legal action taken against the Appeal Committee decision to reject several nominations, we are hopeful that we won’t be held up by a stay order. If by any chance we are to face a delay, we will have to discuss it with the ICC. Hopefully, the ICC would not go hard at us considering that we would then be facing a legal constraint,” the Minister said. Minister Fernando referring to the recent discussion he had with senior cricket players in the national cricket team, said that it was fruitful. He furthered said that he will be having another round of meeting with the same players next Sunday.

“I don’t think we have a problem with our cricketers’ talents. We only have some loss of confidence and other such matters which we can overcome. I think our team is now performing better,” he added.

Minister Fernando also said that 25 cricketers have been shortlisted as the pool to participate at Cricket World Cup. “I am yet to receive the list of names.” he added.

Minister Fernando also said that he strongly believes that Sri Lanka cricket players should receive excellent payments, despite some social ideology.

“We should remember that Sri Lanka has the least paid cricketers in the world than most other cricket playing nations. The ICC gives the SLC the necessary funding. We have to direct them to the improvement of cricket and for the welfare of our cricket players.

“Now that cricket has become a professional sport in Sri Lanka, these cricketers cannot do a job. They will have to solely depend on their payments to carry out their livelihood. They can play cricket only for a specific period of time. They cannot go for a job after quitting cricket either. So considering all these facts, we must accept the fact that these cricketers must be paid accordingly,” Minister Fernando explained.

The Minister said that they might have to introduce a performance-wise criteria in the future for the post of national cricket team coach. “There is thing called return on investment. If we are investing we need results. This is not to personally target anyone. Our present national coach had faced many issues. He was not allowed to execute his plans. Some people have disrupted his work. So this is not a personal vendetta,” he explained.

Speaking further, Minister Fernando said that following a lengthy discussion with the National Sports Council, the Sports Ministry is to establish a “super pool” consisting sportsmen and sportswomen who have high potential to secure international medals. The Ministry is to introduce an insurance scheme to sportspersons as well.

He also said that the Sports Ministry is planning to establish sports stadiums, one for each province that will be under the direct purview of the Sports Ministry. The Minister also said that the ministry has called for tenders relating to High Performance Centers which will be prioritized in an endeavour to uplift sports in Sri Lanka.

The Minister further said that the Sports Ministry is planning to hold elections to all sports associations during 2019.

Asked on the selection process of the Sports Ombudsman, Minister Fernando said that Cabinet is presently looking into it.

Sports Ministry Secretary Chulananda Perera and DG Sports Dhammika Muthugala were also present.

No current players involved in ICC anti-corruption report

Sports Minister Harin Fernando stated that they would have no alternative but to appoint an interim committee if a stay order is given preventing the Sri Lanka Cricket elections from being held.

The elections are scheduled for February 21.

Two candidates contesting the forthcoming SLC elections Mohan de Silva and Ravin Wickremaratne had their nominations rejected by the Election Appeals Committee and have threatened taking legal action.

The Sports Minister commenting on the legal challenge attempted by Mohan de Silva and Ravin Wickramaratne said, “We don’t have any issue with them contesting but we have taken the decision based on the attorney general’s advice hence, I doubt they will be able to challenge the disqualification by the Election Appeals Committee or obtain a stay order against the SLC election during hearings relating to this decision.”

“The Sports Ministry will be represented by the AG, and if it comes to a stay order we will have to go for an Interim Committee, which I am entitled to appoint under Section 32 of the Sports Law,” Fernando said.

Speaking further the Minister stated that there are no current players involved in the anti-corruption report submitted by the ICC and added that they were planning to change the constitution of Sri Lanka Cricket through the parliament act and a cabinet paper to this effect will be submitted by next week.

“A plan has been prepared to change the SLC constitution. This was done after consulting players like Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Muthiah Muralitharan and Sidath Wettimuny. I will be forwarding it to the Cabinet for approval next week, and then to Parliament,” said Minister Fernando.

“After it is passed in Parliament we can start working towards implementing the changes. I have sought advice in this matter from many quarters, disregarding party politics and divisions, and have even consulted the former Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara,” he said.

The Minister said that not only cricket but they need to change the system of all national sports bodies.

“National sports associations have become a family business for some people and it is like a kind of a mafia. Anybody who loves the sport should be able to come forward and contest for office,” he said.

Requests for ‘B’ sample

Boxer Indika Perera of Slimline SC rejected doping allegations and requested a ‘B’ sample test after a random urine sample taken from him during last year’s Clifford Cup boxing meet proved positive with anabolic steroids.

The ‘A’ urine test was done in an Indian laboratory and Indika was temporarily suspended from the sport soon after. He has requested for the ‘B’ test from the Sri Lanka Anti Doping Agency (SLADA) yesterday.

Accordingly the ‘B’ test will be carried out during March 10-14.

Indika won the gold medal in the 49kg weight category at the Clifford Cup.

“If his ‘B’ test too is proved to be positive he stands to be banned for a maximum of four years ban,” said Sri Lanka Anti Doping Agency Director-General Dr. Seewalee Jayawickrema.

“He has requested for the ‘B’ test, and that sample also proves to be positive with anabolic steroids as the ‘A’ sample he will face a disciplinary inquiry with SLADA.

According to World Anti Doping Agency rules his punishment can be extended to four years, Dr Jayawickrema explained.

The inquiry was attended by Indika’s coach Manju Wanniarachchi, Mahesh Dahanayaka with Nishantha Dharmadasa from Slimline SC and secretary of the Sri Lanka Amateur Boxing Association Gayan Dhananjaya.

This is the first time a Lankan boxer is charged with doping allegations after Manju Wanniarachchi was banned for two years when tested positive at the 2010 Commonwealth Games where he won a gold medal in the Bantam weight category.

Los Angeles, Wednesday: Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from next month’s WTA Indian Wells Open after failing to overcome a right shoulder injury, tournament organisers said Wednesday.

The 31-year-old Russian star has been struggling with a right shoulder problem which forced her withdrawal from the Saint Petersburg tournament last month.

Organisers of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells announced on Wednesday the same problem had prompted her withdrawal from the March 4-17 event in California.

Sharapova’s place in the main draw will be taken by Germany’s Mona Barthel, organisers said.

Sharapova has been struggling back to top fitness since watching from the sidelines during her 15-month doping ban that ended in 2017. AFP

Pele on Banks:

Gordon Banks saves a certain goal from Pele in the 1970 World Cup.

For many people, their memory of Gordon Banks is defined by the save he made against me in 1970. I understand why.

The save was one of the best I have ever seen – in real life and in all the thousands of games I have watched since.

When you are a footballer, you know straight away how well you have hit the ball. I hit that header exactly as I had hoped. Exactly where I wanted it to go. And I was ready to celebrate.

But then this man, Banks, appeared in my sight, like a kind of blue phantom is how I described him. He came from nowhere and he did something I didn’t feel was possible. He pushed my header, somehow, up and over. And I couldn’t believe what I saw. Even now when I watch it, I can’t believe it. I can’t believe how he moved so far, so fast.
