VAR only for ‘clear and obvious’ mistakes says top rules chief

$

London, Monday: The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) should only overturn on-field decisions when there has been a “clear and obvious” error, according to one of football’s leading international rules officials.

VAR has proved highly controversial since it was introduced into the Premier League this season. A particular source of concern has revolved around offside calls.

Last weekend saw Norwich, Brighton, Sheffield United, Wolves, Brighton and Crystal Palace all have goals disallowed by marginal VAR rulings amid doubts over whether the available technology is accurate enough to make such fractional calls.

Players and managers have also questioned whether the system should not be used to reverse an on-field decision that appears correct to the naked eye, a view that received support on Monday from the general secretary of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) -- the sport’s ultimate rule-making body.

Lukas Brud, while not addressing specific incidents in English football, said IFAB guidance advises VAR should only be used to correct clear errors also applied to offside.

“Clear and obvious still remains -- it’s an important principle,” Brud said in comments reported by the British media.

“There should not be a lot of time spent to find something marginal.

“If you spend minutes trying to identify whether it is offside or not, then it’s not clear and obvious and the original decision should stand,” he added.

Wolves captain Conor Coady was frustrated when his side were denied what seemed a legitimate equaliser just before half-time against runaway league leaders Liverpool on Sunday when Pedro Neto’s effort was chalked off because wing-back Jonny was deemed to be offside in the build-up.

Wolves eventually lost 1-0 at Anfield and Coady told the BBC afterwards: “A lot of people are going to tell me that they have come to the right decision and they might have. But what is it, an armpit that’s offside, or a toe, or something like that?”

Meanwhile Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was annoyed after VAR denied his side a goal against champions Manchester City -- the fifth time it has happened to the Blades this season.

“Yet again we had another goal disallowed by VAR,” he said.

“That’s about eight or nine over the weekend, this is not a situation helping the game.”

Even City manager Pep Guardiola, whose side won 2-0, said VAR was “a big mess”, with the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss adding: “Hopefully next season it can do better.”

But the introduction of VAR into Scottish football cannot come quickly enough for Glasgow giants Rangers.

Sunday saw Steven Gerrard’s side win 2-1 away to arch-rivals and reigning champions Celtic as they moved to within two points of the Scottish Premiership leaders.

Gers boss Gerrard’s lone criticism of referee Kevin Clancy centred on the official not sending off Celtic defender Christopher Jullien in added time in an incident that saw Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos see red for a second yellow card.

Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson, while insisting he was not criticising referees, said Monday the pace of the modern game made it “extremely difficult to make split-second calls with the degree of certainty required”. AFP

The Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship 2019 will take place from January 6 to 8 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) sponsored for the 12th consecutive year by Prima Sunrice Bread.

The event, one of the most prestigious in the junior golf calendar, will once again be categorised into four age groups: 15-18 years (Gold Division), 12-14 years (Silver Division), 10-11 years (Bronze Division) and nine years and under (Copper Division).

The committed sponsorship of junior golf by Prima has been invaluable to the Sri Lanka Golf Union in promoting the sport islandwide and this year witnessed increased participation of youngsters from the Kandy, Anuradhapura and Nuwara Eliya regions. The popularity of the sport is growing rapidly thanks mainly due to the focused development programs being carried out by Sri Lanka Golf Union to propagate the sport at the grass root level islandwide. This initiative was the brainchild of the Junior Sub Committee of Sri Lanka Golf as a means to identify the nation’s young golf talent with a view to nurturing and developing them for future national and international representation.

Reigning junior boys champion Vinod Weerasinghe will be unable to defend his title as he is currently training in the USA. Vinod, the top ranked junior has won this prestigious event thrice. His absence will throw this year’s tournament wide open to the younger talent such as S. Dhuwarshan (Nuwara Eliya), Aroon Aslam (Kandy), Nirekh Tegwani and Yannik Kumara of Colombo International School.

Last year’s junior girl’s winner Taniya Minel Balasuriya however will once again be defending her title but will face stiff opposition from the rising star, 16 year old Kayla Perera of Ladies College. It should be a toss-up on the day between these two for the girl’s title will largely depend on which of these talented youngsters steady their temperament and are able to hold their nerve under pressure.

The Algama brothers Reshan and Keshav, Thejas Rathis Kanth, C. Dharaniyan from Nuwara Eliya and K. Danushan and Shanal Binuksha from Colombo have been identified as exciting emerging talents, and this event should provide them the ideal opportunity to showcase their skills in the divisional junior categories.

The three rounds of the championship will be used as preliminary rounds for selecting one boy and one girl for the British Junior Open to be held in July 2020.

The prize giving ceremony is scheduled to be held on January 8 at 4 pm while the title sponsor of the tournament Prima Sunrice will provide nutrition for the players during the event.

ODI Team of the Year members reflect

ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Experiences
Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes

They contest cricket’s biggest prizes on the field, but members of the ICC ODI Team of the Year are agreed on one thing – the role of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in their development.

Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Rashid Khan, Mustafizur Rahman and Ross Taylor all honed their craft in the tournament and now walk the field of ODI cricket as kings.

After an era-defining ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2019, and ahead of this month’s renewal of the U19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, top stars say the competition made them the players they are today.

Nearly 12 years on from captaining India to victory at the U19 Cricket World Cup, Kohli is the top-ranked ODI batsman in the world with 43 centuries to his name in the format.

Kohli steered a side featuring Ravindra Jadeja and Manish Pandey to overall victory in Malaysia, leading by example and making a superb hundred in the group stage against West Indies.

Less predictably, then-19-year-old Kohli gave his medium pace a successful airing, snaffling a vital two for 27 including the wicket of captain Kane Williamson in the semi-final win over New Zealand.

True to form, Kohli relished testing himself against the best young players in the world.

“The ICC U19 World Cup was a very important milestone in my career,” said Kohli, who made 235 runs at an average of 47 in 2008.

“It helped us get a good platform to build on and make our careers from thereon, so it holds a very important place in my mind and heart. It is very important to understand and respect the opportunity it provides to you.

“I remember playing against Kane (Williamson). He was someone who always stood out in the team, his batting ability was very different from the other players who were around.

“It is good to know that so many people from that batch, like Kane and Steve Smith, have played for their respective countries.”

Stokes’ ability to shape games and tournaments in England’s favour shone through at the 2010 U19 Cricket World Cup, where he appeared alongside fellow Men’s Cricket World Cup winners Joe Root and Jos Buttler.

Just as he pulled England back from the brink to win last summer’s Cricket World Cup, Stokes strode to the crease at 60 for four in the final group game of 2010 against India and took matters into his own hands.

The all-rounder peeled off 100 from 88 balls, including six sixes, to lift England to a total of 246 that they successfully defended and gave them a flawless group stage record in New Zealand.

It’s an innings that still sticks in the memory of Root, who feels the tournament played a crucial role in the development of a world-beating generation of English one-day cricketers.

“We didn’t get off to the best start in that India game but Ben played one of the best innings I’d ever seen for a player of that age,” said Root.

“It was on the first world stage you can play on – he made a brilliant hundred and we ended up winning the game against the tournament favourites, which was fantastic and great to be a part of.

“It was a launchpad for me and I played in a squad with a guys who are still in the team now, like Ben and James Vince.

“To play alongside players like that, learn from them and watch them develop, to then go back and play against them in county cricket, meant we were always pushing each other to get better.”

Four years on and the modern bowling phenomenon that is Rahman was unleashed by Bangladesh on ICC tournament play for the first time in the UAE.

The left-arm quick, nicknamed ‘Fizz’, put in place the building blocks of his reputation with three for 24 against Namibia and then three for 11 against Canada as Bangladesh won the Plate Championship.

Mustafizur credits the U19 World Cup with helping him make a record-breaking start to international cricket, becoming the tenth bowler in the history of ODIs to take five wickets on debut, against India.

“It wasn’t the best event in terms of results,” reflects Mustafizur. “But it was a stage to show my skills and the tournament really helps you to get accustomed to international cricket.

“When I made my T20I debut the next year against Pakistan, and then ODIs against India, I was ready to accept the challenge of playing against world-class teams and the U19 World Cup helped me a lot in understanding what was expected at that level.

“This tournament gives aspiring cricketers a taste of things to come and those who go on to make it to international cricket find it easier to adapt to the demands if they have the experience of an U19 World Cup behind them.”

Ross Taylor, the first Kiwi to reach 20 ODI centuries, first served notice of his talent back in 2002 in a U19 Cricket World Cup on home soil.

The tournament was graced by future stars in Dwayne Bravo, Hashim Amla, Shaun Marsh and George Bailey and won by an Australia side spearheaded by Cameron White and Xavier Doherty.

For Taylor, who skippered New Zealand, the tournament did nothing short of confirm cricket was the life for him.

“Whenever you represent your country and at whatever level it is, it’s always a special thing and even more to do so in your own country in front of family and friends,” said Taylor.

“I was fortunate and humbled to captain the side against all of the best young players in the world.

“It was nice to give you that hunger and drive to want to play at the next level.

“To go to a tournament like that at such a young age – I was 17 – meant I think it reinforced that this is what I wanted to do in life.” – ICC

Arsenal blow away Man Utd to hand Arteta first win

$

London, Wednesday: Mikel Arteta got everything he asked for in his first win as Arsenal manager with a rampant first 45 minutes from the Gunners earning a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates.

Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis Papastathopoulos scored the goals to secure just a second win in 16 games.

Arsenal started the game three times as many points off the top four as the relegation zone, but a first home win in 87 days hauls Arteta’s men up to 10th and within four points of United in fifth.

“I am very pleased with the performance, I’m even more pleased with the result,” said Arteta after his third game in charge. “Everything I wanted to see on the pitch, I saw tonight.”

There were signs of encouragement for Arsenal in Arteta’s home debut against Chelsea on Sunday when only a late collapse saw a 1-0 lead turn into a 2-1 defeat.

However, this time the hosts saw the game through as a dismal United performance raised fresh questions over their chances of finishing in the top four.

“At the moment we are suffering to maintain that level of intensity of the first halves,” added Arteta.

“That will come, but as well I really liked the resilience they showed. I liked to see them suffer together.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were again shorn of Paul Pogba, who faces another month out after an operation on a troublesome ankle injury that has kept him out for the majority of the season.

Pogba’s absence is still evident in United’s inability to create when denied the chance to counter-attack and they failed to recover after falling behind early on.

“After they scored the first goal, it seemed like they got loads of energy,” said Solskjaer.

“They were the better team. They were aggressive, they regained the ball and it was hard to get the ball off them.” AFP

New Zealand sweat on ailing Williamson and Nicholls

Third Test commences at Sydney today

New Zealand batsmen Henry Nicholls and Kane Williamson

SYDNEY, Thursday - A flu-like bug that has ripped through the New Zealand squad ahead of the third test against Australia forced captain Kane Williamson and batsman Henry Nicholls to miss training for the second successive day on Thursday.

Tom Latham, who took the captain’s press conference in the absence of Williamson, said left-arm spinner Mitch Santner had also been affected by the bug but he was hopeful all three would be fit to play when the test got underway on Friday.

“It’s up in the air at the moment but a couple of the boys are a bit crook unfortunately,” Latham told reporters at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). “They’re going to have today off as well as yesterday, so fingers crossed tomorrow they’ll be right to go. “I think it’s flu-like symptoms, I’m not 100% sure,” he added. “It’s gone around the team a little bit, which isn’t ideal, but they’re resting up today and hopefully they’ll be good to go.”

New Zealand were beaten heavily in the first two tests of the three-match series but the loss in particular of world class batsman Williamson would be a major blow to their hopes of putting in a good performance to close out the tour.

Latham, however, thought it would have to be a very serious illness for his captain to miss the match.

“I think it will take a lot,” he said. “He’s obviously a great leader amongst this group and he’s passionate about this group so if there’s any chance of him playing, even if it is a small chance, I’m sure he’ll play.” Santner was under pressure for his place in the side in any case after taking 1-250 over the first two tests and his illness makes it even more likely that off-spinner Will Somerville will play his fourth test.

The 35-year-old former accountant, who knows the SCG well after playing for New South Wales for four years until 2018, was called into the squad this week.

New Zealand have only one extra batsman in the squad but Latham said the presence of a few all-rounders would make the position easier if Williamson and Nicholls were unable to play.

“Obviously if we lost those guys it would be a little bit disappointing but .... whatever side we end up playing, we’ve got the backing of the whole group that it’s the right team to do the job,” he said.

“We haven’t necessarily played our best brand of cricket since we’ve been over here and the guys are really excited to go out there over the next five days and try to put in a good performance.”

Australia likely to be unchanged, says Paine

Australia are unlikely to play a second spinner in the third test against New Zealand and will probably field the same team that beat the tourists in Melbourne last week to seal the series, captain Tim Paine said. The Sydney Cricket Ground is the only spin-friendly test venue in Australia and uncapped wrist spinner Mitchell Swepson was added to the squad to offer the option of a second slow bowler along with Nathan Lyon.

“We’ll have a look in the morning,” captain Tim Paine told reporters on Thursday.

“It’s likely we’ll go unchanged but it’s still a possibility when we see that wicket tomorrow morning that we’d go for another spinner.” Top order batsman Marnus Labuschagne’s part-time leg-spin, which has earned him 12 wickets in 13 tests, offers Paine another option if Australia decide

to stick with one specialist spinner and the SCG wicket turns towards the end of the match.

Big wins in Perth and Melbourne have given Australia an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series going into the Sydney test, which starts on

Kingswood’s Hirushan Perera makes debut for CH against Police

Club rugby resumes after the Christmas weekend with CH and FC and Police SC battling it out in the Dialog Inter-Club Rugby League at Police Park today.

Both teams have secured a win each against Navy SC.

Police are likely to field the same team that played against Kandy SC last week but their strength is foreign player Emosi Vunvosa. He has been the top performer for Police so far this season and also played a crucial role for them last season as well.

On the other hand CH who have recruited Rajeev Perera as their forwards coach are keen to impress and add more wins under their belt.

CH skipper Rohitha Rajapaksa said that recruiting Rajeev saw an improvement in their performance against Navy. “We are also planning to add more upcoming players to our squad rather than considering the big names. So for the game against Police we have decided to include Kingswood’s Hirushan Perera. Apart from him, it will be the same team that won against Navy.”

Police will be favoured to win due to their overall strength but CH are stopping at nothing to put up a good fight and turn the game in their favour.

Racial quotas for test team clouds South Africa selection

CAPE TOWN, Thursday - The complexity of the transformation process in South African cricket, amid a desire for a racially diverse team that better represents the country, will again be highlighted on Thursday as selectors pick their side for the second test against England.

South Africa’s previously all-white cricket team has changed dramatically over the last three decades but there remains a quota target in team selection to redress the imbalances from the country’s apartheid era.

At least two black players and another four from South Africa’s mixed-race and Indian communities must play but last week’s first test had two new white players capped while another is expected to debut on Friday in the second test at Newlands.

The quota target fell short by two players in Pretoria after Temba Bavuma suffered a hip injury and was replaced by debutant Rassie van der Dussen, who now looks to retain his place as the No. 5 batsman while Bavuma battles with his fitness.

Dwaine Pretorius was chosen to fill the all-rounder’s berth in the side, ahead of Andile Phehlukwayo, who has played in four tests and 52 One Day Internationals.

Fulfilling the quota requirements while fielding a competitive team has long been a sensitive issue but after a poor 2019, returning to winning ways looks to be the immediate priority of the four selectors, two of whom are black.

Sunday’s first test win arrested a run of five successive defeats but came in tandem with criticism about too many whites in senior roles in and around the team after the recent shake-up of Cricket South Africa. At the top of the order, coach Mark Boucher has already said Pieter Malan will most likely make his debut on Friday in place of Aiden Markram, who had surgery this week on a broken finger, which could fuel further controversy.

Keegan Petersen, who is of mixed-race, was called to replace Markram in the squad but Boucher said: “For us to go messing around with the opening position wouldn’t be clever. “Pieter Malan has done a lot of good work over a long period of time. It’s his home ground. At the moment, we are swinging towards having a straight swap for the opening batsman.2

“We understand transformation and we understand we need to do a lot of hard work on a lot of players, especially all-rounders,” Boucher added.

Archer, may miss test

England paceman Jofra Archer may miss out on second test against South Africa after skipping bowling practice at Newlands on Wednesday.

Archer, who took six wickets in the first test defeat at Pretoria including 5-102 in the second innings, did bat in the nets and took part in fielding drills but a sore right elbow kept him from bowling. A decision on the 24-year-old would have to be made just before the start of the test on Friday.

He had been a doubt for the first match after suffering from the virus that swept through the England camp on their arrival in South Africa but recovered in time to play in the 107-run defeat.

For the first time on tour, England’s entire 19-man squad were at practice on Wednesday including spinner Jack Leech, who has suffered the longest from the flu bug.

Leech could come into contention as a spin option for England in the Newlands test.

“Fingers crossed we’ve beaten the illness.

"It was nice to have everyone here and training together today,” said wicketkeeper Jos Buttler on Wednesday.

“We start the new year afresh. We’ve had a lot of things thrown at us since the start of the tour but we know it is no excuse for how we performed (in the first test).”

Cricketers from both Australia and New Zealand wore black armbands on day one of the third Test in Sydney in honour of the fire and emergency personnel who have been dealing with fires across the country over the last few weeks.

Tim Paine, the Australia Test skipper, said the Sydney Test was an opportunity to provide a distraction to the people affected by the fires. “At times, for us, it’s important to look outside the bubble that we live in as international cricketers,” he said.

“The way we look at it is it might be an opportunity for us to provide a distraction for people and a bit of happiness if we can by playing a brand of cricket that Australians are proud of.

“We speak about one of the things being humble and showing some humility, so as I’ve said before, our thoughts certainly go out to the people that have been affected by it. The firefighters have been the real heroes of this summer. They’re taking on some extreme risk and putting themselves in some pretty [dangerous] situations.”

The hazardous fires have affected thousands of people in New South Wales, with the state declaring an emergency for the third time in as many months. Cricket Australia have declared that if the smoke from the fire reaches the Sydney Cricket Ground, they will pull the players out of the field.

“We won’t be putting the players’ health at risk, nor will be putting the health of match officials or fans at the match, or our own people, our own employees, at risk,” said Kevin Roberts, the Cricket Australia chief executive.

“That’s something we’ll be monitoring consistently throughout the five days’ play. “This is quite a unique situation. But we’re as confident as we can be that we’ve got the right expertise around us and that good judgment will be exercised and the safety of everyone at this great ground will be put first … Really, we need to be treating this like rain delays.”
