INDORE, Tuesday: Skipper Virat Kohli struck an unbeaten 30 as India beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the second Twenty20 international in Indore on Tuesday.

The hosts rode a 71-run opening stand between KL Rahul, who hit 45, and Shikhar Dhawan, who made 32, to chase down their target of 143 in 17.3 overs and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after the first match was rained off.

Leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga took the wickets of the Indian openers but Shreyas Iyer, who scored 34 before falling to paceman Lahiru Kumara, and Kohli, who hit the winning six, got the team home.

Paceman Navdeep Saini led India’s disciplined bowling attack to restrict Sri Lanka to 142 for nine in the second Twenty20 international in Indore on Tuesday.

Seam bowler Shardul Thakur claimed three wickets while Saini and wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav took two each after India elected to bowl with the three-match series tied at 0-0 following the opening match being rained off.

Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals but it was Yadav’s two key strikes including Kusal Perera, for 28, that further put a lid on the islanders’ scoring.

Saini, who bowled opener Danushka Gunathilaka for 20 claimed Bhanuka Rajapaksa caught behind for nine, returned impressive figures of 2-18 from his four overs.

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah also took a wicket on return from his four-month injury lay-off after getting Dasun Shanaka bowled for seven with a slower ball.

Thakur returned in his final over and the team’s 19th to rattle the lower-order with three strikes including two on successive deliveries.

Number eight Wanindu Hasaranga signed off the innings with three straight boundaries off Bumrah but the total still seems below par on what is said to be a good batting pitch.

The third match is on Friday in Pune. AFP

CAPE TOWN: Ben Stokes produced an explosive spell of bowling as England beat South Africa by 189 runs inside the last hour of the fifth day of the second Test at Newlands on Tuesday.

The win levelled the four-match World Test championship series.

South Africa were bowled out for 248, with the last wicket falling when only 8.2 overs were left in the match.

Stokes took the last three wickets in the space of 14 balls to clinch the victory. He finished with three for 35.

South Africa defied the England bowlers for most of the day. Only three wickets fell before tea as South Africa defended grimly after starting the day on 126 for two after being set an improbable 438 to win.

Opening batsman Pieter Malan, making his debut, made 84 in 369 minutes and 288 balls before he fell to Sam Curran with the second new ball. But he was the only player to be dismissed before lunch and tea.

It meant England needed five wickets in the last session, with a minimum of 31 overs to be bowled.

Quinton de Kock fell to a rare loose shot after he and Rassie van der Dussen had batted together for more than two hours. De Kock, who made 50, had been troubled by Joe Denly’s leg-spinners into rough outside his off stump -- but fell to a short ball which he pulled to midwicket.

Van der Dussen batted for 194 minutes and 140 balls, scoring only 17, before falling to a smart tactical move by England. He had been batting solidly against Stuart Broad when James Anderson moved to leg slip and Van Der Dussen promptly glance the next ball straight to Anderson.

Stokes produced an inspired spell of fast, hostile, short-pitched deliveries to have Dwaine Pretorius and Anrich Nortje caught in the slips off successive balls before he took the final wicket when Vernon Philander was caught at gully. AFP

Police SC’s contribution to Sri Lankan rugby

$
0
0

Sri Lanka Police Rugby has a proud history that goes back to 1881 where a team of Police officers participated in a rugby game at the “Kew Garden” Park in Malay Street, Slave Island. In 1891, a team from the Pettah Police Station played a rugby match. In 1961 Police SC together with Division ‘B’ teams from Air Force, Army, Navy and University were permitted to play alongside the Division ‘A’ clubs, CR & FC, CH & FC, Havelock SC, Kandy SC, Dimbula Athletic & Cricket Club, Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club, Uva and Kelani Valley Club in the Clifford Cup competition. The expanded competition, allowed all thirteen clubs to play each other once on a home and away basis in alternate years and at the end of the season the best eight teams went on to play in a knock-out tournament for the Clifford Cup.

The Police Sports Club were promoted to Division ‘A’ in 1967 and the first year they made the Clifford Cup finals, defeating Dickoya MCC in the quarter-final and C R&FC in the semi-final before losing the final to Havelock Sports Club 3–11. They won their first Clifford Cup in 1970, under the captaincy of Abdul Majeed, drawing in the final 6–6 with Havelock SC. The club went on to win its first Clifford Cup outright in 1972, when led by Anton Benedict they defeated Colombo H&FC 12–9. In the following year, Police SC participated in another drawn Cup final, this time with Army SC.

The club won its first Division ‘A’ league title, which was then known as the ‘John Player League’ in 1979, under the captaincy of Charles Wijewardene and retained the title in the following year (1980) led by Nimal Lewke. They were successful again four years later in 1984, under Upali Vithanage, winning the Clifford Cup. Police went on to win six consecutive league titles from 1984-89. During this period the club won numerous Sevens wins and clinched the triple crown twice. In 1985 under the leadership of Sunil Sahabandu, they were unbeaten in the league, won the Clifford Cup, by defeating Havelock SC 22-16 and were also victorious in the Sevens competition. In 1986 under H. Premasiri they retained the league title, and in 1987 under Muruga Jayaratne they won the league title and the sevens. In 1988 Ajantha Samarakoon captained them to win the double again.

In 1989 they enjoyed their most successful season under Hafeel Marso clinching the triple crown (the League title, Sevens and Clifford Cup). In 1990 they were heading the League points table, at the end of the first round but had to withdraw from the competition due to the Second Eelam War. In 1991 under Hemantha Yatawara they won the league and Clifford Cup, their last titles to date.

The present Police rugby chairman S/DIG M.R. Latiff is all out to bring back Police rugby to its former position, and he has urged them to hold their heads high. This time the Cops are led by prop forward Shanaka Harischandra and Asanga Rodrigo is the coach.

Kandy has contributed a lot to Police rugby. Over the years, a large number of Kandy school products have donned the “Blue jersey”. Police came a long way since that match winning kick of Bagoos Sourjah which brought Police into that famous 1970 Cup final, where they beat the star studded CR & FC. That was the turning point of Police rugby.

Police won the coveted Clifford Cup for the first time in 1972 under the leadership of Josephian Anton Benedict. The 1972 Police team was coached by Former Trinity, Kandy SC, CR & FC and Sri Lanka center late Kavan Rambukwella.

In that year Police had a superb rugby chairman - Rudra Rajasingham. He too played for Trinity College and Kandy Sports Club before joining Colombo clubs.

The first Cup winning Police team which was led by Anton Benedict, who later led the Havelock SC and had some of the Kandy players in his Police side, like brilliant wing-three-quarter Bandula Wijesinghe of (Nugawela Central College), Sam Samarasekara (Trinity and Kandy SC), P.S. “Rock: Banda of (Poramadulla Central), P.S. Kularathne (Vidyartha), Juragon Savangam (Trinity), R.M. Lafir (Vidyartha and Kandy SC), Nimal Lewke (St. Sylvester’s and Kandy SC), Daya Jayasundara (Dharmaraja and Kandy SC), Nimal Abeyasinghe (St. Annes) and S. Somachandra (Gampola Central). Some of these players did not play rugby for their schools but learnt the game, after joining the Police.

Sri Lanka coach Mickey Arthur compliments India on win

Sri Lanka coach Mickey Arthur (left) and India celebrate another Sri Lanka wicket.

INDORE, Tuesday: Sri Lanka coach Mickey Arthur feels that international cricket teams can learn from India on how to nurture young players and empower them with responsibilities at critical junctures.

Be it in the bowling or batting department, cricketing powerhouse India have built a solid bench strength in all formats under Virat Kohli’s leadership. And that has impressed Arthur.

“It has been interesting watching them introduce young players and giving them responsibility at critical times, that has been so good. And seeing those young players respond has been amazing. I think India in cricket is in really, really good shape at the moment,” said the 51-year-old Arthur in response to a PTI query after India beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the second T20 International.

“You look at someone like KL Rahul - he hit some shots that were absolutely amazing. India along with probably Australia now - I think Australia have found their mojo again - are certainly the flagbearers in world cricket,” said Arthur.

Before Sri Lanka, Arthur coached South Africa (2005-10), Australia (2010-13) and Pakistan (2016-19).

India are not as strong in the T20 format as they are in the other two formats but Arthur can barely find any chink in their armoury.

“They are a great cricket team and there are no apparent weaknesses.”

Arthur has taken over a Sri Lankan team in transition and knows that it is very much a work in progress.

On Tuesday, most of the Sri Lankan batsmen threw their wickets away after getting starts and that did not go down well with the head coach. India chased down the 143-run target in 17.3 overs.

“We did not get enough runs. We lost one of our bowlers (Isuru Udana) unfortunately in the warm-up, but I think we were about 20-25 runs short of putting India under some pressure. We had a couple of our batsmen getting starts, but starts are not good enough. Somebody needs to get a 60-70 or 80 for us, and that is going to be the journey for us.”

Arthur admitted that it would take some time for the young batting unit to gain some confidence.

“It is quite a young batting unit. For us as coaching staff and players, we have got some serious work to do in terms of game plan, match awareness and playing the big moments. I think we had 49 dot balls tonight, which is too many, as the best teams in the world (would) have 25 dot balls.”

The International Cricket Council yesterday announced the umpire and match referee appointments for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020, which will be staged in South Africa from 17 January to 9 February.

Experienced umpires Wayne Knights and Ravindra Wimalasiri will take charge of the opening match of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup after the officials for South Africa 2020 were confirmed.

New Zealand’s Knights and Wimalasiri of Sri Lanka – who have taken charge of 71 ODI and T20I matches between them – will officiate when hosts South Africa play Afghanistan in the Kimberley opener on January 17. Rashid Riaz Waqar will be the TV umpire for the first of 48 games in the tournament, with a 19-strong team of match officials confirmed by the International Cricket Council.

Among those taking charge will be veteran Ian Gould, whose esteemed senior international career came to an end when he retired during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 on home soil.

The Englishman will join forces with Ahmad Shah Pakteen when India get the defence of their title underway against Sri Lanka in Bloemfontein, one of five group-stage matches he will officiate as on-field umpire.

In all, 16 umpires from 12 different countries will be on the field for five matches each in the first stage of the U19 World Cup, with eight also performing the role of TV umpire.

The list includes five umpires who looked after the 2019 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier late last year, including Sam Nogajski – who was on duty for the final between Papua New Guinea and Netherlands.

The Australian will take the reins for an historic occasion, with Japan playing their very first match in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup when they face New Zealand in Potchefstroom. Iknow Chabi, of Zimbabwe, will join Nogajski out in the middle.

Nigeria will become the 31st different team to take part in the event when they face Australia, the second-most successful side since the competition first began in 1988 as the Youth Cricket World Cup.

Bangladesh umpire Masudur Rahman Mukul and Nigel Duguid, of West Indies, will be raising their finger in that match, on January 20 in Kimberley.

The pool stages will also see an Ashes rivalry revisited at youth level, with Adrian Holdstock and Asif Yaqoob in the middle for Australia’s clash with England, also at Kimberley, three days later.

The 16 umpires will be joined by three match referees for the duration of the tournament, with former Sri Lanka international Graeme Labrooy officiating alongside home official Shaid Wadvalla and England’s Phil Whitticase.

Umpire and match referee appointments for the knockout stages will be announced after the teams have been confirmed. The appointments for the Plate and Super League final will be finalised after the semi-finals.
