SLC acknowledges Weeraratna’s recognition for DRS

Sri Lankan lawyer Senaka Weeraratna’s battle for due recognition as the author of the Decision Review System (DRS) to minimize umpiring errors in the middle as far back as 1997, has met with some success with Sri Lanka Cricket eventually acknowledging his concept.

Weeraratna’s suggestion was tabled and minuted at the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket this week, thus giving him an impetus to push forward his case which he has been fighting for over 20 years with requests and appeals to both Sri Lanka Cricket and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Weeraratna has been fighting for the acknowledgement that Duckworth and Lewis got for their contribution towards deciding the result of rain-affected matches in One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 internationals. Ashley de Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket said that they had on an earlier occasion submitted documents pertaining to Weeraratna’s claims to the ICC but nothing had come out of it.

“Now that SLC has taken the matter up at the ExCo we will forward whatever documents that Weeraratna submits to the ICC again and let them take a final decision on it,” said De Silva. In his quest for recognition Weeraratne has also appealed to former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara who today holds the exalted post as president of the MCC.

LAHORE, Friday - Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara will relive his fateful 2009 journey to Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on Friday after returning for the first time since the deadly attack which plunged Pakistan into cricket isolation.

Sangakkara is captaining England's venerable MCC for four games in Lahore, where he was wounded in a militant attack on the Sri Lankan team that left eight people dead in March 2009.

International cricket is only now returning to Pakistan, who hosted Sri Lanka late last year for their first home Test series since the guns-and-rocket attack.

Sangakkara, 42, suffered shrapnel wounds to his shoulder and narrowly escaped a bullet which whistled past his head as the Sri Lankan players lay pinned down on the floor of the team bus.

But Sangakkara, who is also the president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), said Pakistan was slowly restoring its reputation as a safe destination for visiting teams.

“Security is always a major concern everywhere in the world,” he said after arriving in Lahore on Thursday. “I think the steps that have been taken in Pakistan over the past few years have instilled a great amount of confidence in the cricketing nations. “I think slowly and surely that confidence is building up and the more times international sides tour, that message becomes stronger and harder to ignore.”

The few international games in Pakistan have been guarded by tight security, with snipers on rooftops, roads sealed off and heavily armed patrols.

But Sangakkara, one of the world's best batsmen of the past two decades, said playing in Lahore sends out a powerful symbol. “I think the best thing is to send the message by the way we play on the field,” said Sangakkara.

“I am happy that we are able to play our part to try and encourage countries to look at Pakistan as one of the best cricket destinations. “It has been in the past and I am sure it will be that again very soon.” The MCC will open their tour with a Twenty20 match in Lahore on Friday. The

remaining matches will also be played in the city on February 16, 17 and 19. – AFP – AFP

South Africa boss asks fans to respect Smith, Warner

JOHANNESBURG, Saturday - South Africa’s cricket boss has pleaded with fans to treat Steve Smith and David Warner with respect and not “embarrass” the board with poor behaviour when the Australian batsmen tour the country for the first time since a ball-tampering scandal.

Smith and Warner, who incurred 12-month bans for their parts in the tampering plot during a Cape Town test two years ago, were jeered relentlessly by English crowds during the one-day World Cup and the Ashes series last year.

Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) interim chief executive Jacques Faul said fans who misbehaved would be ejected from venues during the limited overs series, which starts with a Twenty20 match in Johannesburg on Friday.

“I would plead with South African fans to respect our opponents and don’t go overboard with these things,” Faul told Fairfax media. “It’s competitive on the field, and we don’t need it. Sport in general doesn’t need that behaviour.

“We have a very strict policy in terms of fan behaviour and we will evacuate people but the damage will have been done.” Australia’s 2018 tour of South Africa was tense on and off the field, and well before the tampering incident at Newlands.

Animosity between opener Warner and South Africa wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock spilled over into a heated stairwell confrontation during the first test in Durban, with team mates stepping in to separate the players.

Warner and his wife, Candice, were subsequently targeted by the crowds, and CSA apologised to the Australian team after two of the board’s officials were photographed wearing Sonny Bill Williams masks with fans at the ground..

Candice Warner had a tryst with New Zealand rugby international Williams

more than 10 years before the incident. “What happened last time (in South Africa), the behaviour was unfortunate,” said Faul, who stepped in as CEO in December following Thabang Moroe’s suspension for alleged misconduct.

“It’s embarrassing when it happens - for the stadium and the national federations.

“If there are best practices that we can learn from to prevent it we’re happy to look at it.”

Last month, England all-rounder Ben Stokes was fined by the International Cricket Council after a foul-mouthed row with a fan at the Wanderers ground during the fourth test in Johannesburg.

Stokes said he had been subjected to repeated abuse from the crowd and apologised for his “unprofessional” reaction.

CR and FC managed to pull off a hard-fought win by 31 points (3T, 4P, 2C) to 22 (4T, 1C) win over Army Sports Club in their Dialog ‘A’ division second round rugby league match played at Welisara yesterday.

At half time CR led 22-5.

Youngster Murshid Zubair drew first blood through a penalty in the 4th minute for CR who scored their first try in the 13th minute when Milan Suranga broke over from the ruck. Zubair added the extra points for CR to lead 10-0.

Both teams made some good moves from the kick off and CR punished Army in the first quarter with some excellent touches. Their second try was scored by Zubair and he was successful in converting it to make the score 17-0.

The soldiers found their form and the first try came from Isuru Madagedara. From the scrum, the ball was sent across the field and Dikkumbura saw the overlap and drew the defenders towards him and got the offload to Madagedara 17-5.

CR’s response was well constructed try from Janidu Dilshan shortly before half time.

On resumption in the 52nd minute, Ashan Bandara found a way through for Army’s second try which also went unconverted 22-10. Army followed that up with another touch down from Lahiru Ratnayake to cut down the lead to 22-15.

Although Army made inroads into CR territory they could not prevent CR from scoring back to back penalties 28-15. Army scored their fourth try through Sudaraka Dikkumbura which was converted but CR ensured they kept their lead intact with another penalty that more or less settled the issue.

Point scorers for CR&FC were Milan Suranga 1T, Murshid Zubair 1T, 1P, 2C, Janidu Dilshan 1T and Riza Mubarak 3P.

Point scorers for Army SC were Lahiru Ratnayake 1T, 2C, Ashan Bandara 1T, Sudaraka Dikkumbura 1T, Isuru Madagedara 1T.

Sune Luus of South Africa fields a return throw during the ICC Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup Warm Up match against Sri Lanka at Karen Rolton Oval, Adelaide on Sunday.

South Africa claimed their first warm-up win - a feat they failed to achieve in the run-up to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2018 - but Sri Lanka didn’t let it come easy.

Sri Lanka got off to a flying start, Udeshika Prabodani setting the tone from the offset by bowling Lee for a duck before taking the big scalp of Dane van Niekerk, who also failed to score.

Prabodani’s early showing (two for eight) helped to restrict South Africa to 23 for two from six overs but middle-order batters Marizanne Kapp (44) and Mignon du Preez (28) stabilised the Proteas’ innings.

Kapp was then dismissed by Chamari Atapattu in her first over before the Sri Lanka captain delivered again to bowl Luus for seven with just three overs remaining.

Laura Wolvaardt (38 not out) and Chloe Tyron (23 not out) stitched together a 44-run partnership to finish the innings on 146 for five. Sri Lanka pushed on with the bat with Hasini Madushika scoring 22 but a flurry of wickets quickly derailed their chase.

Luus struck twice in her first over before finishing with the match’s best-bowling figures of four for 20 while Nonkululeko Mlaba, Ayabonga Khaka and Van Niekerk took one apiece in the 41-run victory.

Sri Lanka’s Achini Kulasuriya was injured fielding and was taken to hospital as a precaution but has since been discharged and taken back to the team hotel.

Luus said: “I’m very happy with my performance. If it’s your day with the ball, it’s your day and I’m just happy it came off. All the bowlers contributed and we’re happy with how the game went.

“We had a rocky start with the bat but I think our middle order brought it back nicely.

“Before the last T20 World Cup, we lost all our warm-up games so everyone went into this game pretty nervous, but we’re pretty happy with how it went.”

Sri Lanka meet England on 18 February in their second warm-up game at Karen Rolton Oval, Adelaide.

Meanwhile Heather Knight and Danni Wyatt led the way as England bounced back from not making the final of a preceding tri-series, beating New Zealand in their first warm-up fixture in Adelaide.

Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei celebrates winning gold.

MONACO, Sunday - Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei shattered the 5km road world record in Monaco on Sunday, shaving 27 seconds off the mark set by Kenya’s Rhonex Kipruto last month.

Cheptegei, the 10,000m world champion, crossed the finish line in 12 minutes and 51 seconds in his first race of the year to eclipse Kipruto’s effort from the 10K Valencia Ibercaja in Spain last month.

Kipruto had set the mark en route to the 10km road world record. “Wow, this is really great. I had sub 13 minutes in my mind today so when my legs felt good during the race, I really decided to go for it,” the 23-year-old Cheptegei said.

“To take this many seconds of the record makes me very happy and is a great first test for me in an important season.”

Frenchman Jimmy Gressier finished second in Monaco with a time of 13:18 to beat the European record of 13:29 set by Julien Wanders in the same race last year. – Agencies

Glasgow, Saturday: Sweden’s Armand Duplantis set a world pole vault record of 6.18 metres at an indoor meeting in Glasgow on Saturday, adding one centimetre to the record he set in Poland last week.

Duplantis, who won silver at last year’s world championships in Doha, cleared the bar with something to spare and won a world record bonus cheque for $30,000.

The old record of 6.16m set by French vaulter Renaud Lavillenie had stood since 2014 until Duplantis broke it last Saturday in Torun, Poland.

Duplantis, known by his nickname “Mondo”, did a lap of the track signing autographs in Glasgow.

“There are so many things that go into this, so many years of hard work,” he said. “It’s really complicated but I guess when you’re doing it right it seems simple.

“I feel good on the runway, I feel fast, I feel strong and I feel I am working the poles I have really well. I’m excited for the outdoor season. The Olympics is the biggest thing that a track and field athlete can compete in and that is when I want to have my best competition this season. -AFP

Bangladesh axe Mahmudullah from Zimbabwe Test

Bangladesh have dropped batsman Mahmudullah and recalled pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe starting next Saturday.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim also returns to the side for the Dhaka match after opting out of the Test against Pakistan earlier this month over safety concerns.

The 16-member squad named Sunday has four changes from the team that lost to Pakistan by an innings and 44 runs in Rawalpindi. Spinner Mehidy Hasan and pacer Taskin Ahmed are back after recovering from injury while batsman Soumya Sarkar, pacers Rubel Hossain and Al-Amin Hossain were dropped.

Batsman Yasir Ali Chowdhury and fast bowler Hasan Mahmud are the two uncapped players in the squad.

“I believe we have selected the best possible Test squad under present circumstances”.

“There is a very nice blend of experience and potential,” chairman of the selection panel, Minhajul Abedin, said in a BCB statement.

“It is unfortunate that some players had to miss out but our priority has been to ensure balance and continuity. We felt that Mahmudullah needed a break from the red ball.”

Mahmudullah has scored only one half-century since making 146 runs against New Zealand in March last year.

Bangladesh are currently on a bad run of form in Tests, losing their last six matches -- three of them by an innings margin.

The hosts will also play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20s in the upcoming series in March.

SQUAD: Mominul Haque (captain), Tamim Iqbal, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Liton Das, Taijul Islam, Abu Jayed, Nayeem Hasan, Ebadat Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mehidy Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Yasir Ali. - AFP

Zimbabwe looking forward to Bangladesh challenge: Taylor

$

DHAKA, Sunday - Zimbabwe batsman Brendan Taylor has said his side’s performance in the recent series against Sri Lanka would motivate them to do well against Bangladesh in the one-off Test later this month.

Zimbabwe, playing their first Test series in more than a year, pushed Sri Lanka hard in two home matches in January before narrowly going down 0-1.

They lost the first Test, and then an unbeaten second-innings century from Kusal Mendis denied them a series levelling-win in the second Test.

“We have had two good Test matches that went five days against Sri Lanka. We took a lot of positives from that.

Hopefully, we can carry that on to the first Test (against Bangladesh),” Taylor told reporters at Dhaka airport on Saturday. Zimbabwe will play their Test against Bangladesh at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium from February 22.

“Bangladesh have always been very difficult to... (beat) here. We know what we are up against... But we look forward to it,” said the 34-year-old Taylor.

Bangladesh are currently in a bad run of form in Tests, losing their last six matches -- three of them by an innings margin -- but Taylor warned that would not give his side any leverage.

“I think they always play well at home. That’s their comfort zone, where they thrive... and always have a good record,” he said.

Batsman Craig Ervine will lead Zimbabwe in the Bangladesh Test, with regular skipper Sean Williams missing the game to be with his family for the birth of his child.

Zimbabwe will also play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20s during the Bangladesh tour in March. -AFP

All-Star MVP Award named in honour of Kobe

CHICAGO, Saturday - The National Basketball Association All-Star Game MVP Award has been permanently named for the late Kobe Bryant, league Commissioner Adam Silver said on Saturday.

Bryant, an 18-time All-Star who won a record-tying four All-Star Game MVP awards, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles on Jan. 26. He was 41.

“His loss, together with his daughter and those other seven people on the helicopter, is unspeakable,” Silver said at a news conference before the All-Star Saturday Night event at the United Center in Chicago. “As the father of a child ... that’s the unimaginable.”

The Kobe Bryant MVP Award will be presented on Sunday to the most valuable player at the end of the 2020 NBA All-Star Game.

“Kobe Bryant is synonymous with NBA All-Star and embodies the spirit of this global celebration of our game,” Silver said in a statement.

“He always relished the opportunity to compete with the best of the best and perform at the highest level for millions of fans around the world.”

Bryant made his NBA All-Star Game debut in 1998 at age 19 – the youngest player to ever play in an All-Star Game. His 18 All-Star selections are the second most in NBA history behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, at 19.

Silver said the decision to name the MVP award in honour of Bryant was made collectively by league officials and some players.

“To all of us, it seemed like the appropriate way to bring honour to him,” Silver said.

Silver also spoke about the loss of former NBA Commissioner David Stern, who oversaw explosive growth in the popularity of the game during his 30-year tenure. Silver said that Stern, who died in January, and Bryant had a lot in common.

“They were both determined to win,” he said. “They could be difficult at times because they prioritised winning, and often, they didn’t have time for some of the niceties around personal relationships because it was about winning.”

Moments after Silver’s news conference ended, the packed United Center stood and cheered as the game clock was wound up to 24.2, in honour of Bryant’s No. 24 jersey number and the No. 2 that Gianna Bryant wore when she played basketball at her father’s Mamba Sports Academy. – Agencies

Dinesh Chandimal-back on track

$
0
0

Dinesh Chandimal gave me a warm welcome at his spacious bungalow in Thalangama. As expected he was friendly, unassuming and down to earth. His petite wife was friendly and was there in the background.

TSUNAMI

He set the ball rolling by mentioning about the horrendous experience he had to undergo confronting the ‘TSUNAMI.’At the time Chandimal lived at Patabendimulla, Ambalanggoda, and had to confront this as a 13 year old. On that day December 26, 2004 he got up at 4.30 am to watch a cricket match, New Zealand against Sri Lanka with his father ( they did not have a TV set and used to watch at a neighbourr’s place) it was a Poya day. As is customary for Buddhist households during Poya days, Dinesh Chandimal’s family partook in cleaning their household, and his mother opened the back door which was facing the sea, to throw the dirt out and to her horror saw the first wave approaching, ‘alarm bells rang’ and the whole family ran 100 metres towards the landside seeking shelter and approached a nearby hill, his mother was seven months pregnant. He also mentioned that they escaped the second mighty wave by a couple of seconds, if not there would not be a ‘Dinesh Chandimal today.’ He and his siblings had to rough it out for three days in a Temple until an elderly lady gave them proper shelter. Eventually the Government provided them with a house.

PLEASANT SURPRISE

During that traumatic period, Chandimal got a pleasant surprise, he got an offer to play for Ananda College Colombo and he mentioned that Agith De Silva(the best left arm spinner Sri Lanka produced until Rangana Herath came on the scene) and helped him in switching from Dharmashoka to Ananda. Incidentally both these highly talented cricketers took the same route, Dharmashoka to Ananda. Chandi didn’t favour the switch because he didn’t want to leave his friends in Ambalngoda. He thought it would stand him in good stead for his future career prospects other than cricket by joining Ananda College. He never dreamt that he would reach such “dizzy heights in cricket.”

A SHINING STAR AND A GUIDING LIGHT AT ANANDA

Chandimal recalled that he represented Ananda College for three years and captained in his final year, during that year they won outright 10 matches and scored 1540 runs . He was also the school boy cricketer in 2008/09 and to cap it all he was the Best Captain, Best Fielder and The Best Batsman.

After getting selected to play for the under 19 Sri Lanka team Chandimal set his sights on representing Sri Lanka, not only was he a talented batsman but a brilliant wicket keeper and an enthusiastic and agile fielder.

He stated that In 2010 he played for Sri Lanka under Kumar Sangakkara in West Indies it was to be his first senior outing. Thus far Chandimal has scored nearly 4000 runs in Test Cricket at an average of 49, in ODI’s 3,600 runs at an average of 74, T 20’S 800 runs at an average close to 105, impressive stats indeed.

ROMESH KALUWITHARANA

Romesh Kaluwitharana was the cricketer who inspired him most and he had that ability commented Chandimal. He was also proud of the fact that that he played alongside Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene,Mutthia Muralitharan, Thilakaratne Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya and was grateful to all of them.

T 20-2010,2012,2014,2016 and the 2015 World Cup as the record shows Chandimal has played in five World Cups and is still 30 years of age, disciplined and fit. According to Chandi he still have a good 5 years in the tank. The writers opinion is that given his due opportunities, without short circuiting Dinesh Chandimal if he keeps his cool could surpass all the greats except Aravinda De Silva. I feel that Chandimal’s inbuilt athleticism, will enable him to get back on track easy.

He recalled that during the ICC World Cup 20015, he got around 52 runs in 24 balls at a strike rate of 216, it was unfortunate that Chandi got a hamstring injury if he carried on in that vain in Sydney they would have gone through to Quarters and would have had a chance of lifting the World Cup in 2015,lamented Chandimal.
