S.P. De Silva the 80 year old double international

$

0

He is an unsung sports hero who came from the backwoods of Kalutara. I met him at the Mattegoda bus stand, drenched in sweat as it was a steamy hot day, from there it was another bus journey. As is the case freelancers have to do it alone and they say there is “no gain without pain!”

S.P appeared to look thin and wiery and was a man of few words, as I found out later his deeds were quite outstanding. He was a brilliant left extreme who played for the army together with players in the calibre of pint sized Amidon who was a brilliant dribbler from Kandy. Ramaswamy, Karunapala Fernando too played with him Neville Abeygunawardene was the coach recalled S.P.

He also stamped his class in Rugby and at this point would like to mention about the write ups he got from the famous sports writers of yester year.

HIS BOOTS ARE MADE FOR PLACE KICKING

BY T.M.K. SAMAT(OBSERVER 29-7-73)

At 32 when most other rugby players have gone to fat. Sena Premachandra De Silva proclaims, ‘I‘ll continue with it till I die drop dead. He can continue doing just that, but he will never meet with a finer hour of glory than the one that wrote a new chapter in local rugby last week. As army rugby’s first non commissioned officer leader S.P. De Silva brought the Clifford Cup symbol of local rugby supremacy, the soldier’s way.

An old boy of Kalutara Maha Vidyalaya who brought glory to the Army in no small measure.

OUTSTANDING ARMY SPORTSMAN RETIRES-by R.L. FERNANDO(DAILY NEWS APRIL 30TH 1984)

The booming left footed kicks of Army’s outstanding Sri Lanka’s rugby and soccer player Seekkuarachchi Premachandra de Silva popularly called SP will be missed. The 43year old lieutenant hung up his boots to take an appointment in the Middle East.

SP began his professional career by joining the first field Engineers as a Sapper and served under Brigadier P.D.Ramanayake. After a successful career of 23years as a servicemen and sportsman.

At school he captained the soccer and cricket teams in 1957 and 1958. His rugby career with the Army started in 1963- as a center three quarter and a place kicker under Colonel Bertie Dias. Two years later he moved to the full back spot and took the kicks at goal with Col. C.S. Fernando and warrant officer Y.T. Ousman. In 1970 De Silva won his Sri Lanka cap and played under Hadji Omar as a scrum half and in 1973 led the Army to share the Clifford Cup with Police led by Nizam Hadjireen.

S.P. regards Capt Roy Tissera and Col Sena P. De Silva, Tony Sirimanne, Nimal Maralande and Ken Murray as the outstanding players ‘during his time’ and Navy Lt Comm. Darley Ingelton the best referee.

His best match was in the 1982 Knock –out final between CH& FC and Army. CH were well in the lead and SP missed an easy penalty and conversion. But with10 minutes left he put out two superb 45 yard drop goals to give the army a 16-9 win.

Soccer

Silva’s soccer career was equally colourful. He won his national cap in 1965 when he was chosen to play under Neville Abeygunawardene and later that year was in the ‘Ganefo Games’ in Indonsia. He captained the National team from 1970 to 1973.

His best match was for Sri Lanka(led by Hashim Dean Snr) against Pakistan in 1968. Sri Lanka won 3-1 with S.P, Zainulabdeen and Amidon getting goals.

S.P.’S BOOT ON TARGET

By Lawrence Machado(Sun-28-6-81)

Army would have wished for a more stylish victory over Kandy Sports Club having dominated play for over half the game.

Using their ace place kicker S.P.De Silva the soldiers came back on the victory trail by six points to climb to fifth place in the Clifford Cup table. Though both teams went in at full steam, neither stooped to dirty tactics which was a welcome respite from the previous day’s proceedings at Police Park. Kandy taking the field without their play maker Nimal Malagamuwa however scrum half Lakshman Dullewa coming out with colours. Dullewa’s penchant for loose play, that marks him as a forward, saw him attack the defense with commendable ease. He opted to keep play with his mobile forwards who were however baulked by the wall of defense put by the Army.

Kandy were impressive in rucking where they won all the loose mauls with their distinctive style. The soldiers had no clue for the workmanlike attitude of their opponents in the rucks and conceded valuable ground. Full back Shaibdeen was a tower of strength for the visitors and rescued the team on numerous occasions with some well-directed kicks. Kandy were leading 4-0 at the breather after the resumption the soldiers cut the lead with a penalty conversion by veteran S.P. de Silva. This gave them more inspiration and the homester’s swarmed all over the Kandy goal area in a vain attempt to score a try. S.P. De Silva clinched the game for the Army when he put over a simple penalty in the 34th minute.

Today S.P.DE Silva leads a quiet but active life. He has done not only our country proud but also the Army. This unsung ex Army soldier should get his due soon, they say ‘old soldiers never die, they just fade away.’ On request his contact number could be made available.

Shashikala Siriwardena ends career on high note

Siriwardena with the Player of the Match award.

Shashikala Siriwardena says she couldn’t have imagined a more satisfying end to her career than taking four wickets to steer Sri Lanka to their first ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 win.

Siriwardena, who has called time on her 17-year career following her country’s exit from the tournament, produced the ideal swansong as her four for 16 set Sri Lanka well on their way to a nine-wicket victory over Bangladesh.

Seeing their former captain pick up the Player of the Match award was an emotional moment for Sri Lanka after their first win, but Siriwardena says the key to her match-winning performance was treating it like any other game.

“From the beginning of the day it was very hard as I knew I was playing my last game,” said Siriwardena.

“I was kind of nervous knowing I would be wearing national colours for the last time. It was pretty emotional, but I told myself it wasn’t the time to get emotional.

“I knew my contribution would be important so I told myself to not think about my retirement until the match ended. I really love to perform, but the main thing was getting the win for the team.

“We knew we couldn’t go without a win. We knew we had the skill and the potential to be in the top four.

“I’m truly satisfied that I did something to help my country. I’ll miss being with these girls. I have spent more time with this team than with my family.”

For Bangladesh, the loss to Sri Lanka was their fourth of the tournament, the Tigers finishing bottom of Group A.

They will be left rueing an underwhelming batting performance against New Zealand in Melbourne after looking on the brink of causing an upset when they bowled the White Ferns out for 91. But despite falling just short of a win in Australia, skipper Salma Khatun is confident playing the world’s best Down Under will hold her side in good stead for future tournaments.

“We need to keep regularly playing the top-ranked teams in order to improve,” said Salma.

“The more we play with them, the more we’ll improve. That’s the key for us.

“In one match we batted well, in another we bowled well but our fielding has been a constant concern.

“This experience will help us to move forward. The most important things we need to improve on are our power cricket and level of fitness.

“Our fitness is the main thing that will help us improve our skills and performance.

“Murshida Khatun will be a future star of women’s cricket. The more she plays, the more she will improve too.”

Team mates congratulate Shashikala Siriwardena as she snares another Bangladeshi wicket during their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup match.

Johannesburg, Monday: Former captain Faf du Plessis will return to South Africa's one-day international squad for a three-match tour of India later this month.

Du Plessis and fellow batsman Rassie van der Dussen were rested for a current series against Australia but both were named in a 15-man squad announced by Cricket South Africa on Monday.

Orthodox left-arm spinner George Linde, who made his Test debut against India in Ranchi last October, is in line for his first white-ball cap in place of left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, who is unavailable because his wife is soon to give birth to the couple's first child.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was unavailable because of a groin injury.

Kyle Verreynne, who made an impressive international debut by scoring 48 and taking three catches in the first match against Australia on Saturday, has been retained but Janneman Malan, who failed to score on debut in the same match, was left out.

A statement from Cricket South Africa said the selections were a continuation of a search for the next generation of players who will potentially represent the country in the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India.

"It is a good opportunity for the players selected to put their hands up and show what they are capable of in the tough playing conditions of India," the statement said.

The South African squad will leave for India following the third and final one-day international against Australia in Potchefstroom on Saturday. The first match in India will be played in Dharamsala on March 12.

The second and third matches will be in Lucknow on March 15 and Kolkata on March 18.

South Africa squad: Quinton de Kock (captain, wkt), Temba Bavuma, Faf du Plessis, Beuran Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lutho Sipamla, Jon-Jon Smuts, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne

India humbled in three days as New Zealand sweep series

$

CHRISTCHURCH: India captain Virat Kohli was left frustrated and deflated as New Zealand won the second Test inside three days in Christchurch on Monday to sweep the series.

India started the day at 90 for six and were all out for 124, before New Zealand chased down the required 132 to win for the loss of three wickets in 36 overs.

It ended a disappointing tour for India and Kohli as New Zealand, who won the first Test by 10 wickets early on day four, wrapped up the series with ease.

New Zealand are now unbeaten in their last 13 home Tests, winning nine of them, and in the past decade their record as hosts is played 39, won 20, drawn 13 and lost five.

In the latest series, on traditional New Zealand green wickets, India managed scores of 165, 191, 242 and 124, reflecting the low contributions from Kohli of 2, 19, 3 and 14.

Kohli came to New Zealand as the world's top Test batsman and oozing charm as he described New Zealand as the “nice guys” of cricket.

But during the series he lost his top ranking to Australian Steve Smith and when Kane Williamson went for three in the first innings of the second Test the pressure showed when he gave the New Zealand skipper a very animated send-off.

There was further evidence of frustration when he was caught on camera yelling an obscenity at a group of New Zealand supporters on Sunday.

The end came quickly for India on day three as Tim Southee and Trent Boult tormented the batsmen with their variety of inswing and outswing deliveries targeting both sides of the stumps.

Hanuma Vihari was the first to fall, in Southee's second over, when he turned a legside delivery too fine and was caught by BJ Watling diving to his left. AFP

Wilder to face Fury for another rematch in July

Los Angeles, Monday: Tyson Fury and dethroned world champion Deontay Wilder will stage the next leg of their fight trilogy in July at the Las Vegas venue where their rematch took place.

Wilder officially exercised his right to another fight against Fury and plan is to have it on July 18 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, US media reported Sunday night.

"We received a letter from Wilder's team on Friday night, and we agreed with the networks and the hotel that July 18 was the optimal date," promoter Bob Arum told the Los Angeles Times newspaper.

"We had a seamless promotion last time with Al Haymon, PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) and Fox. We look forward to working with them again."

The news comes a little over a week after Britain's Fury stopped Wilder in the seventh round of their heavyweight title rematch in Las Vegas.

Despite clamor for a unification fight between Fury and fellow Briton Anthony Joshua, Wilder had been expected to exercise his contractual right for a rematch.

Wilder also said this week that he would keep co-trainer Mark Breland in his corner, despite earlier hints that he was ready to part company with Breland, who threw in the towel in the seventh round of the loss to Fury.

Breland, a former Olympic and world champion, called a halt to the rematch at the MGM Grand Garden Arena after Wilder had been knocked down twice by Fury.

Fury seized the World Boxing Council heavyweight title from Wilder, 14 months after the two fought to a dramatic split-decision draw in their first meeting in Los Angeles. AFP

Are we seeing the best of Angelo Mathews?

When Angelo Mathews entered international cricket 12 years ago big things were expected from him and he managed to fulfill them and even go onto lead his country in all three formats of the game with merit. He was essentially a middle order batsman and he also bowled occasionally at medium-pace proving to be a more than useful all-rounder. All this was until he became injury prone in the mid 2000s. His injuries were by and large below the waist especially in his legs. Hamstrings, torn calf muscles and achilles heel were part of his injuries which was to affect his career constantly that not only made life frustrating for Mathews but also to the selectors and coaches who had a time trying to balance the side without a Mathews or with a Mathews who can only bat not bowl. Captaincy also became an issue with Mathews eternally getting injured and Sri Lanka having to appoint a different player to lead the side in the three different formats from time to time.

This scenario went on for some time and in that period Sri Lanka’s cricketing stocks plummeted to new depths which they have not experienced since they won the World Cup in 1996.

In the mean time Mathews worked hard on his fitness – he had been branded a slow runner between wickets by former coach Chandika Hathurusingha who also accused him of running out 49 of his partners in 64 run out decisions he has been involved in. In other words he was not a candidate for any of the two white ball formats.

The recent tour to Zimbabwe saw Mathews’ fitness levels reaching new heights. He had shed quite a lot of kilos and looked slim and fit that made him light on his feet. With Zimbabwe painstakingly using up nearly one and a half days to pile up 358, the only way Sri Lanka could win was to gain a massive first innings lead and put pressure back on the Zimbabweans in the second innings.

To do that someone had to play the anchor role and Mathews did it to perfection. He batted 10 hours in the middle in oppressive hot conditions to score his first Test double century frustrating the Zimbabwe bowlers for 468 balls. His marathon knock enabled Sri Lanka to gain a handy first innings lead of 157 and after dismissing Zimbabwe for 170 in the second innings, coast home to a comfortable 10-wicket win.

The second Test affected by rain for a large part ended in a draw with Mathews contributing 64 and 13 to carry away the Player of the Series award.

WEST INDIES’ NEMESIS

Mathews’ next series was the three-match ODIs against West Indies and he once again proved that he was playing near his best with some sterling performances on the field. Although he failed with the bat scoring 18 in three innings, his value as an all-rounder was priceless and it was on display for all to see as he helped Sri Lanka sweep the series 3-0. What we saw was a new and forceful Mathews energising the entire Sri Lanka team on the field with his fielding and bowling.

Like he did at Chester-le-Street in the 2019 World Cup game he once again deprived West Indies of a possible win in the third ODI at Pallekele, proving to be their nemesis.

At Durham with Nicholas Pooran going strong with a maiden ODI century West Indies were sniffing victory chasing Sri Lanka’s total of 338. Sri Lanka had a problem on their hands with leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay leaking runs and they had to find another bowler to plug the leak. The captain Dimuth Karunaratne turned to Mathews who had not bowled since December 2017. It was a gamble and it paid off. Mathews dismissed Pooran with his first ball and off the fifth saw Isuru Udana drop Sheldon Cottrell. The over cost only three runs, a wicket and a dropped catch. What an over! Sri Lanka went onto win the contest by 23 runs.

Then at Pallekele again Mathews was West Indies’ stumbling block. West Indies were giving Sri Lanka some anxious moments in their chase for 308 when Sri Lanka lost the services of their spearhead Nuwan Pradeep who usually bowls well at the death with a hamstring injury. Mathews put his hand up to compensate for Pradeep and came up with another stunning performance to finish with four wickets for 59 runs bowling the full complement of 10 overs!

The last time Mathews had bowled ten overs in an ODI was five years ago (in July 2015) and here he was once more in the thick of things guiding his team to victory.

“I told Dimuth that I’ll bowl five overs and if we really need, I’ll take over again. After Nuwan Pradeep got injured, someone had to come in. So I did,” said Mathews after taking the Player of the Match award. “I am very happy that I could bowl all my 10 overs. I have worked very hard during the last five to six months with my trainer. I could cut down a lot of my weight. Thereafter I started bowling.”

Mathews playing two back to back series without showing any signs of injury is certainly a revelation. Are we seeing the second coming of Mathews in the latter part of his career?

Has Sri Lanka turned the corner in ODI cricket?

Player of the Series Wanindu Hasaranga ran circles around the West Indies in all three departments.
Player of the Series Wanindu Hasaranga ran circles around the West Indies in all three departments.

When the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series commenced between Sri Lanka and West Indies there wasn’t much to choose between the two sides as the host’s were ranked eighth and the visitors ninth.

West Indies came to the series on the back of a fighting performance in India where they lost the series 1-2 and then whitewashed Ireland 3-0 at home. Sri Lanka were rather apprehensive going into the series having lost their last ODI contest 0-2 to Pakistan.

By the time the West Indies arrived a lot of water had flown under the bridge and Sri Lanka had a new head coach in South African Mickey Arthur and a well established support staff comprising former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower (batting coach), former Australian cricket coach and player David Sekar (fast bowling coach) and Australian Shane McDermott (fielding coach).

What the Sri Lanka cricket team needed was a jolt in the arm. Since the premature departure of Graham Ford, the players had been handled by several coaches and the team had simply meandered along with no sense of direction or focus which is reflected by their rankings in all three formats.

Fielding and fitness standards had dipped to low levels, the batting was struggling to give players permanent slots in the order and the bowling was leaking too many runs in the middle overs when other countries were taking wickets.

Then came Mickey Arthur, a stickler for discipline. He stamped his mark immediately by creating more professionalism, manifesting in better fielding and improved fitness and giving the players the confidence they had lacked that no matter what, even if they failed their places in the team were assured.

This is reflected by Sri Lanka playing the ODI series against West Indies with an unchanged side for all three matches that have not happened for quite a while and emerging triumphant by sweeping the series 3-0. The first and last matches went to the wire with Sri Lanka pulling off wins by one wicket and by six runs and, they beat West Indies rather comprehensively in the second by 161 runs.

There were no outstanding players in the series but 22-year-old Wanindu Hasaranga captured the spotlight with his batting, bowling and fielding performances that weighed heavily in him winning the Player of the Series award.

It was his cool, calm and collected knock of 42 not out that saw Sri Lanka over the line in a tightly contested first ODI at the SSC where they chased down a target of 290. In the second ODI at Hambantota he destroyed the West Indies batting for 184 taking three wickets for 30 and in the final game at Pallekele it was his bowling once again (1/41) that saw West Indies fall short of their target by six runs. In addition to his batting and bowling he was outstanding in the field cutting off many runs from the outfield.

Hasaranga is only at the initial stages of his career and should start varying his deliveries and find new ways to tempt the batsmen into playing a false stroke if he hopes to remain on top in international cricket. Remember what happened to Ajantha Mendis. He was a sensation when he entered international cricket bamboozling batsmen around the world with his ‘carrom ball’ deliveries. But it took the opposition only a few months to sort him out and once that was done he was taken to task and eventually faded away from international cricket.

The Windies batsmen no great players of spin were all at sea against Hasaranga’s wily leg-spin and googly bowling and it was his and the presence of Lakshan Sandakan and Dhananjaya de Silva in the middle overs that enabled Sri Lanka to restrict the run scoring and get wickets in that passage of play which they had been struggling to do in the recent past.

The Lankan bowling unit displayed a lot of discipline with tight control of line and length and backed up by razor sharp fielding managed to control the free-scoring West Indies stroke-makers.

Sri Lanka was able to strike the right team balance because of the return of Angelo Mathews to full fitness which enabled him to once again turn his arm over. Picked in the side as a batsman Mathews was a failure contributing just 18 runs in the three matches, but compensated in other ways to the team’s success with his fielding and bowling. Who can forget that fantastic running catch he held at mid wicket in the second ODI at Hambantota to send back Nicholas Pooran for 31 ending West Indies’ last real hope and then taking on the responsibility to bowl the final overs in the third ODI at Pallekele when Nuwan Pradeep pulled a hamstring, and producing a incredible spell at the death taking the wickets of Pollard, Holder and Allen to carry Sri Lanka to a nail-biting six-run win.

During the series the Lankan players in all probability carried out virtually all what the head coach asked for and were duly rewarded. One of them was for the top order batters to fire and having done that lay the platform for big hitters like Thisara Perera, Hasaranga and Isuru Udana to come and give the total a final boost. A team’s credibility is judged by how it recovers from bad starts and comes out victorious. This was displayed in no uncertain terms in the second ODI when Sri Lanka recovered from losing their first two wickets for nine in the third over to post their highest total against West Indies – 345-8 courtesy of two young batters in Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis who both got hundreds and figured in a record double century stand.

There were some eyebrows raised when Thisara Perera who had not played for his country for seven months was picked over Dasun Shanaka, but the selection eventually proved the right one for Perera with his batting and bowling made significant contributions and fitted nicely into the scheme of things.

Kusal Perera given the licence to free his arms and score failed to get going and he also missed a couple catches and stumping chances behind the wicket. He has Niroshan Dickwella breathing down his neck.

Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne also had a rather quiet series but led the team admirably. Since taking over the ODI reins from Lasith Malinga for the 2019 World Cup Karunaratne has an impressive record as captain winning 10 out of 14 matches with four losses. The 3-0 whitewash of West Indies was the second in consecutive series under his leadership having handed out a similar thrashing to Bangladesh in July last year. Karunaratne was not part of the Lankan ODI team that lost the series 0-2 in Pakistan having stood down from touring on the grounds of security concerns. In his absence Lahiru Thirmanne captained the side.

For the West Indies opening bat and wicket-keeper from Barbados, Shai Hope stood tall being a consistent run-scorer for them passing the fifty-run mark in all three matches that included a century and two fifties but otherwise only Nicholas Pooran and Sunil Ambris managed to cross the fifty mark. It was not so much the West Indies batting that let them down but their bowling and fielding that allowed Sri Lanka the luxury of extra runs and overs. In tight contests these little things mattered a lot.

The fast bowlers lacked the discipline to maintain a tight line and conceded 31 wides in the series and the fielding under pressure wilted with several misfields and overthrows and dropped catches which proved costly. In the midst of all this Antiguan Alzarri Joseph emerged as West Indies’ main strike bowler finishing the series as the highest wicket-taker for both sides with 10 wickets at 16.40.

For the sponsors of the series National Development Bank (NDB) they could not have asked for a better start to their entry into international cricket sponsorship – what more than a 3-0 whitewash!
