31 affiliated members decide today:
Suresh Subramaniam-Rohan Fernando

The much debated National Olympic Committee (NOCSL) election will be held today at the NOCSL headquarters, commencing 6pm to appoint office bearers who will govern the apex sports body for a four-year term. The two main parties headed by presidential candidates Rohan Anthony Fernando and Suresh Subramaniam seek a majority vote to appoint 12 top officials in the NOCSL. It has been a controversial election campaign from the beginning with both parties pointing fingers at each other.

The three-member NOCSL Election Committee headed by Dr. R.M.K. Ratnayaka yesterday put an end to a lot of confusion and controversy involved with the election by deciding that only 31 affiliated members will be eligible to vote at the election. The election committee was appointed by the immediate past president Hemasiri Fernando and included S. Virithamulla and S. Liyanagama as the other members.

The number of eligible votes has been a controversy from the beginning as presidential candidate Rohan's alliance lodged protests against voting eligibility of some federations. They pointed out that Hockey and Badminton federations have been dissolved and functioning under the Director General of Sports, so they should not be allowed to vote. The main controversy was about the eligibility of two votes by the Athletes' Commission. The Athletes’ Commission was established in 2016 on an International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommendation. Even though the NOCSL constitution allows two votes by the Athletes' Commission, Rohan's alliance protested that the Athletes' Commission has not yet obtained approval from the General Assembly of IOC and ratification from the IOC, which is the legitimate procedure for voting rights.

Considering the protests, the NOCSL Election Committee yesterday cleared the doubts, by allowing the two votes by the Hockey and Badminton federations while not approving the Athletes' Commission's votes. The NOCSL Election Committee further said that only after the IOC ratification and its general Assembly approval, the Athletes' Commission will be allowed to vote at future elections.

As both parties had no objections on the Election Committee's verdict, the IOC representative who will be arriving today will most likely play the role of an IOC supervisor at the election.

Presidential candidate Suresh Subramaniam said that he is very confident of winning the race from the beginning. “I have over 25 years of experience in local and international sports administration. I have a good plan to develop sports and I know how to do that properly. I have never tried to influence anyone and never did anything below the belt," he said.

Former NOCSL secretary and secretary candidate from Suresh's alliance Maxwell de Silva emphasized preserving the spirit of sports and serving Sri Lankan sport are his top priorities regardless of winning or losing at the election.

"We never wanted to create problems and not a single objection or protest has been lodged by us. So we hope that we will get the majority," he said. Senaka Clement Ranasinghe is the candidate for the treasurer’s post from Suresh's side.

The other presidential candidate Rohan Anthony Fernando claims that he will get a clear majority if the member federations want to rescue NOCSL from corruption. "People who are against corruption will vote for my alliance. We are very confident that even under a lot of influence by the other party, the rightful people will support us to take Sri Lankan sports to the next level," he commented.

The secretary candidate from Rohan's side, Rohan Prithiviraj Perera said that he wishes the Election Committee will act neutrally, despite influence attempts by the strong rivals.

"We were subjected to lot of ill treatment and one of our Ex-Co candidates had to withdraw at the last moment due to a trap set by the other party. So we have only 11 candidates in our list. But we hope the sports loving people will give us the mandate today," he said. Shirantha Peries is the treasurer candidate from Rohan's side.

How often do you get to see a designated wicketkeeper removes his gloves, pads and other protective gears in order to roll his arms to do bowling in an ODI? Certainly, that is among the rarest sight one gets to see in a cricket match and that too in ODIs. On that note, here we present those wicketkeepers who remove their protective gears in the middle of the match and went to do bowling from the other end.

Chloe Tryon scored 32 runs in just seven deliveries during the first T20 between India women and South Africa.
Chloe Tryon scored 32 runs in just seven deliveries during the first T20 between India women and South Africa.

South African female cricket Chloe Tryon achieved an unprecedented feat during the first T20 against India at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom last Tuesday even though she could not end up on the winning side.

The 24-year-old South African played a scintillating innings of 32 runs in just seven deliveries at the fag end of their innings. During that six-minute inning, Tryon hit four sixes and two boundaries and could not score off just one delivery.

What makes the innings even more remarkable is the strike rate. Tryon’s runs came at a strike rate of 457.14 and if we talk of innings played of over 25 runs, Tryon’s strike rate is one of a kind in international cricket.

According to statistician Mohandas Menon, 4064 men have played international cricket till February 14, 2018 and none of those men have played an international innings with a strike as high as Tryon’s.

In 2007, Dwayne Smith hit 29 off nine deliveries in a T20 match against Bangladesh at a strike rate of 414.28. He had struck four sixes and a boundary in that innings.

Despite Tryon’s record-breaking innings, South Africa lost the match by seven wickets, thanks to Mithali Raj’s 54 not out.

Chasing 164/4, Mithali got good support from Veda Krishnamurthy (37 not out), Jemimah Rodriques (37) and opener Smriti Mandhana (28) as India overhauled the target with 1.1 overs and seven wickets to spare.

Mithali struck her 11th fifty in T20I cricket. Her unbeaten 54 came from 48 deliveries, out of which six went for fours and one went over the rope.

In the South African innings, captain Dane van Niekerk (38), Tryon (32 not out) and Mignon du Preez (31) contributed with crucial knocks. They were assisted by Nadine de Klerk (23 not out), Lizelle Lee (19) and Sune Luus (18).

For India, off-spinner Anuja Patil picked up two wickets, while medium pacers Shikha Pandey and Pooja Vastrakar got a wicket each.

Earlier, Jhulan Goswami had been ruled out of the five-match T20I series against South Africa due to a heel injury. – Indiatoday

There is a popular song hit by the name “Everything I Touch Turns To Gold” by English pop group Saint Etienne that can be attributed to Sri Lanka’s new head coach Chandika Hathurusingha who on his first assignment has changed the fortunes of the national team across all three formats – Tests, One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals. Not so long ago this very same team was struggling to compete with other nations at international level and the cricket they played had reached a point of no return.

Hathurusingha is renowned for uplifting Bangladesh as an international cricket nation during his four-year tenure as coach and now he is beginning to do the same with the Sri Lanka team guiding them to a successful tour of Bangladesh where they won the Test and T20I series and emerged champions of the one-day tri-series that featured Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

The DAILY NEWS caught up with Hathurusingha after the team returned from their triumphant tour of Bangladesh to get to know the intricacies of how the coach works with the players to form a winning combination and what the future looks like for the country’s cricket.

Q: Are you surprised by the results obtained in Bangladesh?

CH: Not surprised by the results but surprised by the improvement we showed in a short space of time. I was surprised by the way we played and the dominance that we showed there. I expected to win but I also expected a lot more fight from Bangladesh especially in the ODIs and Tests.

Q: Do you believe in the old adage that the coach is only as good as the players?

CH: The coach is only as good as the players because you can’t go and bat and bowl for them I certainly believe in that. Then again if you don’t utilise what you have then you can under achieve as well.

Q: You are credited with preparing players mentally and working on mental toughness, how much of that have you been doing with the Sri Lanka team?

CH: Preparing mentally I don’t know what I am doing you must ask the players. We try to be realistic, identify what our strengths are, the opportunities against that particular opponent and the conditions of the particular day and try to maximise every bit of talent we have. That’s what I am trying to do and probably get the players to understand their strengths and limitations.

Q: Can you elaborate on the sudden changes that have been brought about in the games of Thisara Perera and Kusal Mendis?

CH: For both of them I saw immense potential. For example Thisara was never given the particular role that suited him in the past because of that he probably didn’t realise how good he can be. But at the same time he has the second highest Man of the Match awards after another player in Sri Lanka. So that means there is something special in him to change the course of the game which I saw from outside before I came. He is a big part of our plans going forward. I spoke to him of what he can be and what he can do and how good he can be. Then myself, Rumesh (Ratnayake) and Thilan (Samaraweera) put him in a kind of a situation that he is challenged every time he comes to training, more than before. He did train differently in the last few months.

In the case of Kusal Mendis he had lost confidence in himself and a little bit of faith in his ability. It is natural for a young player to have success and a little bit of dip which I have experienced with some other players in other countries where I was coaching. Everyone can have that kind of dip but it’s nothing to be worried about. You have to trust your ability. I felt that a lot of information has been fed to him that has made him lose his way of playing and his actual strength. We had to clear his mind and identify his strengths.

Q: Was it a gamble you took giving an ODI cap to Shehan Madushanka (Tri-series final v Bangladesh) and a Test cap to Akila Dananjaya (2nd Test v Bangladesh)?

CH: I don’t take it as a gamble but I saw something special. I foresaw what they can do given the right role and environment. I believe that throwing talented players into the deep end is the best way to get them playing international cricket. When you put trust on them and if they are talented they will give you results. I spoke to Shehan and told him clearly what I wanted him to do and what he is capable of doing. Just go and do it without worrying about the outcome. Even Akila I thought he was a very good Test player although he was playing only one-day cricket. You have to play them in the right conditions. The conditions in which they played suited both of them.

Q: How do you rate Akila Dananjaya as a Test bowler?

CH: He reminds me of young Murali because his off-spin is ideal for Test cricket, the loop, the speed that he bowls and the lines he bowls are for Test cricket. He can bowl a few other balls as well. I am not saying that he is going to play in every Test match going forward but whenever we think we need someone to suit the conditions we know that we have someone special.

Q: What do you bring to the table that other coaches don’t?

CH: I don’t know to be honest. I believe if you do what other people are doing you’ll never be the best. You have to be really creative and be the leader of whatever you do that’s what I believe. We can’t copy other coaches from other countries. If you do that you can’t be competitive you’ll always become second. If you want to be the best you have to be unique. I try to think differently and work on what I have and maximise it.

Q: How did you manage to change the fortunes of a team that has been struggling in international cricket so quickly?

CH: For instance Bangladesh played the same team and dominated international cricket domestically for the past 3½ years and we beat the same team. I think I read the game and the situation and I am probably blessed with that talent. I don’t know. We did positional changes that is one thing. For example Kusal Mendis to open the batting and Dushmantha Chameera to bowl with the white new ball. My analyst showed me that he had played 9 matches and taken only one wicket in ODI cricket previously. I was surprised for someone like him taking one wicket in 9 games there was something wrong somewhere. We had to change it. There were also positional changes and there is a lot of tactical things involved which I don’t want to divulge.

Q: Do you set challenges or any goals to the team?

CH: Playing international cricket is a challenge itself. You are expected to win games. The challenge comes with playing for your country at the highest level. You have to play to win and find ways to do that.

Q: What does the team need to move forward?

CH: We have a lot of areas we can still improve one thing is we need to believe that we are good enough and the confidence. We have a lot of injuries and we need to manage that, it is something to address. From last month or so we have changed the ways we trained that is going to help us to maximise our potential and help us to win all the time.

A century on debut by Thurstanite Jayavihan Mahavithana 125 not out put his school in a strong position at the end of the first day’s play in the 55th Battle of the Brothers against Isipathana College at the SSC grounds yesterday.

Jayavihan who came to the middle with Thurstan reeling at 33 for 3 wickets after being put into bat by Isipathana was involved in an invaluable stand of 120 with Nimesh Perera who made a well compiled 52 before he retired due to an injury.

Jayavihan was also involved in another fruitful partnership with Savan Prabash of 74 runs. Nimesh Perera had six fours in his innings with lasted 106 minutes while Prabash had four hits to the ropes and four over it in his 25-ball knock of 50.

Jayavihan who faced 143 deliveries had 12 boundaries and four sixes in his majestic innings which helped Thurstan to declare at 314 for 5 wickets. He had the rare honour of being the first Thurstanites to score a century on his debut in the series. He joined a select band of cricketers who has scored centuries in the Battle of Brothers.

Isipathana going into bat before the tea break were also in dire straits losing three wickets for 33 runs before they staged a partial recovery through last year’s skipper Sanjula Abeywickrama 44 not out and skipper Ayana Siriwardana 22 not out who have so far put on 60 runs in an unbroken fifth wicket partnership. Sanjula has so far hit four boundaries.

Thurstan skipper Nipun Lakshan did the early damage by capturing the wickets of Ilangathilaka and Leshan Amarasinghe in the same over before Abeywickrama and Siriwardana averted further trouble.

Los Angeles, Monday: The World Anti-Doping Agency stopped short on Sunday of endorsing the International Olympic Committee's decision to lift Russia's suspension if no new positive drug tests come to light from the Pyeonchang Winter Olympics.

In a statement issued Sunday night, WADA said it "acknowledges" the IOC's latest move but pointed out that Russia is still not adhering to the World Anti-Doping Code.

"It should be clarified that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) remains non-compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code as it has not yet met the necessary criteria of RUSADA's Roadmap to Compliance, following Russia's proven systemic manipulation of the doping control process," WADA said in a statement. The agency said it is continuing to work with "RUSADA to assist them in rebuilding a credible and sustainable anti-doping program." The IOC voted unanimously to keep Russia's ban for mass doping, meaning Russian athletes were not able to march behind their flag at the Pyeongchang Olympics closing ceremonies on Sunday.

But the IOC said the suspension would be lifted -- in "a few days or a few weeks" -- if no new doping cases come out of the Games, where two Russians tested positive for doping.

The vote to maintain the ban for the time being followed a recommendation from the IOC's executive board, which met Saturday and early Sunday over Russia's fate. The IOC "could have considered lifting the suspension given that the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) had respected the IOC's decision of December 5," IOC president Thomas Bach said.

"However, two Russian athletes tested positive for doping here in Pyeongchang." The IOC decision was slammed by the lawyer for Russian whistleblower and former Moscow drug lab director Grigory Rodchenkov.

"Thomas Bach was a drowning man," lawyer Jim Walden said on the weekend.

"But finally cooler heads within the IOC threw him a life preserver. Yet in the decision, the IOC had the gall to claim Russia 'respected' its decision on December 5th to institute the suspension.

"This, despite Russia's continued retaliation against the IOC's main witness, Dr. Rodchenkov, and Russia's litany of further transgressions, including denial and obstruction toward the IOC and WADA. The acrimony caused by Bach's mismanagement should be his undoing."Russia was formally banned in December from taking part in the 2018 Olympics following revelations of widespread drug-cheating, but 168 athletes deemed "clean" were allowed to compete as neutrals. They were representing "Olympic Athletes from Russia" under strict guidelines including a ban on Russia's flag, national colours and the national anthem. The Motor Racing Calendar for the year 2018 got off to a flying start on Sunday when the 21st annual Eliyaknada Hill Climb organized and conducted Southern Motor Sports Club was held on a grand scale. Dilan Seneviratne who returned to the racing circuit after a lapse of three years was in fine form when he went on to erase the existing track record for the Ford Formula Cars Modified up to 1665cc climbing the Hill in only 32.24 secs.

Dilan’s drive on Sunday also was ‘the Best Time’ for the day which gave him the Fastest Drivers Trophy in addition to the record breaking Trophy awarded for the event. Dilan erased the Course record which stood at 32.61 seconds set up by his team mate Dinesh Jayawardene two years ago.

Dilan was in excellent form and was also able to carry away the winner’s Trophy for Ford Formula Cars up to 1600 cc and other special awards on offer for Fastest Driver and the Best Timer’s Award.

Former course record holder Dinesh Jayawardena though he failed in the Formula Class was at his best in the Group SL-GT up to 3500 cc class climbing the Hill clocking 33.745 seconds to be the winner ahead of Ashan Silva and Darin Weerasinghe.

Mahen Madugalle, a veteran in lighter cars did well in Group A modified class on Sunday to away Trophy awarded for event going ahead for the other divers timing clocking a time of 38.630 seconds.

Kavindu Dushan Mudalige riding in the Group SM Supermotard on a Honda CRF 250cc had the best timing for the day clocking an impressive 38.850 seconds to win the event in style and also the Best Riders’ Award on offer.

The only major incident reported on the track was Yasith Gamage’s vehicle which went off the track crashing onto a tree causing heavy damage but Yasith was lucky to escape sans injuries.

Due to intermittent rains that came down the drivers riders were not able to touch their maximum possible on their machines with the expectation of setting up new records. Full credit should go to the organizers who managed to complete the events on a high note under difficult conditions due to the unexpected rains.

Green helps spice up Spurs’ offence in win over Cavs

Danny Green (C) chipped in 22 points as the Spurs snapped a four-game losing skid with a 110-94 win over Cleveland. AFP

Los Angeles, Monday: LaMarcus Aldridge led the offensive attack in the paint and Danny Green shot the lights out from long distance as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 110-94 on Sunday.

Aldridge finished with 27 points and Green chipped in 22 as the Spurs snapped a four-game losing skid.

Green missed Friday's loss to Denver with food poisoning but on Sunday he delivered the perfect side dish to Aldridge's dynamic inside game with his five three-pointers.

"Every win is a big one for us," Green said. "But this month we've had some ups and downs. This is a really good team, especially with the best player in the world over there."

Indeed, Cavs' superstar LeBron James flirted with a triple double by finishing with 33 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists but that's not what James wanted to talk about after the loss.

The reigning All-Star Game MVP slammed officials after the game, saying they are not calling enough fouls on him.

"There's no reason I should be going to the line four times in a game when I drive 100 times to the paint and I'm getting hit and slapped and grabbed and whatever and what not," James said.

James thinks the officials are protecting players that shoot a lot of three-point shots and not calling enough fouls on players like him who like to drive to the basket.

'Chicks dig long ball'

"Chicks dig the long ball and that's what it's about," James said.

San Antonio was called for 12 personal fouls -- only three in the second half -- and shot 32 free throws compared to 14 for Cleveland.

Cleveland dropped to 3-2 since overhauling their roster before the all-star break with three trades.

Dejounte Murray added 13 points and nine rebounds for San Antonio, who are playing without injured star Kawhi Leonard. Elsewhere, Jrue Holiday scored 28 of his 36 points after halftime to lead the New Orleans Pelicans to a 123-121 overtime victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Holiday chipped in nine rebounds and six assists for New Orleans, who won their season-high fifth straight game.

Milwaukee's Jason Terry tossed up a potential game-winning three-pointer but the officials ruled it was after the buzzer.Anthony Davis added 27 points and 13 rebounds for the Pelicans, who trailed by 18 early in the second half but outscored Milwaukee 38-19 in the third quarter.

James Harden scores 27 of his 41 points in the first half as the Houston Rockets held on to beat the Denver Nuggets 119-114. AFP

PSG coach ‘optimistic’ injured Neymar will recover to face Real

Neymar was visibly in pain after turning his ankle, making him a doubt for the Real match. AFP

Paris, Sunday: Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery remains optimistic that superstar Neymar will be fit to face Real Madrid in their do-or-die Champions League clash despite suffering an ankle injury in Sunday's 3-0 victory over Marseille.

Neymar, the world's most expensive footballer, was stretchered off 10 minutes from time at the Parc des Princes as PSG opened up a 14-point lead in Ligue 1.

The 26-year-old was on his own when he innocuously rolled his ankle and flopped to the ground in pain.

"The first examination in the locker room revealed that it was a twist to the ankle. Now we will do a medical examination to find out what this twist is," said Emery, whose team face Real at home on March 6 in the Champions League last 16 where they need to overturn a 3-1 deficit.

"We will wait for the examination, we will be optimistic. If I had to say today (whether or not he will face Real) I would rather say yes to being optimistic."

PSG skipper Thiago Silva told Canal+ added: "Neymar already had a swollen ankle. I'm not a doctor, but I don't think he'll be available on Wednesday (when PSG face Marseille again in the French Cup). He has to rest."

It was an otherwise easy night for the big-spending Parisians as teenager Kylian Mbappe became the youngest scorer in the French 'Classique'.

Uruguayan goal-machine Edinson Cavani was also on the scoresheet while Neymar had a hand in PSG's other goal.

With Monaco drawing 3-3 at Toulouse on Saturday and Lyon held 1-1 at home to local rivals Saint-Etienne earlier on Sunday, it meant none of PSG's three nearest challengers managed to win.

Monaco remain second with Marseille third, two points behind, and Lyon a further five adrift.

This result was never in doubt and Emery even had the luxury of bringing off Mbappe, 19, after an hour to give Argentine international Angel Di Maria a half-hour run out.

PSG were off to a flying start through Mbappe but Marseille were in part the architects of their own downfall.

France midfielder Adrien Rabiot tried to thread a through ball on 10 minutes to Mbappe, cutting in from the right.

Former Aston Villa full-back Jordan Amavi was in place to intercept the ball but he slipped and succeeded only helping it onto teenage star Mbappe, who jinked inside onto his left foot and dragged a low shot inside Yohann Pele's near post.

As expected, the hosts were dictating the tempo and dominating the ball, but Neymar was off target with a header from a Dani Alves cross.

The second came before the half hour mark, though, and again it owed much to poor Marseille defending.

Layvin Kurzawa slipped Rabiot into the inside left channel in the visitors' box and he picked out Brazilian Neymar with a cut-back.

The forward's poked finish was heading off target until his compatriot and Marseille centre-back Rolando thrust out a boot and inadvertently directed the ball into the goal. AFP
