Three T20Is in Karachi were nothing but a humiliating experience

The margin of defeats by West Indies in the three T20Is against Pakistan were depressingly one-sided
The margin of defeats by West Indies in the three T20Is against Pakistan were depressingly one-sided

With the very greatest respect and regard for the good people of Pakistan delighting over the return of official international cricket to Karachi and the manner in which they annihilated the West Indies, those three T20 Internationals were, from a Caribbean perspective, nothing but a humiliating experience, both for the way the matches themselves unfolded and for the surreptitious manner in which a team was put to together by a Cricket West Indies administration that has shown absolutely no regard whatsoever for whatever vestiges of pride and prestige are left in the team for which they are ultimately responsible.

I have actually given myself 24 hours from the third and final thrashing administered by Sarfraz Ahmed’s men to calm down a bit and not come across as someone fixated narrow-mindedly with West Indian considerations. And of course it has to be considered that since lifting a second World T20 title so dramatically in Kolkata two years ago, Pakistan have comfortably had the measure of the champions, winning six of seven matches (three in the United Arab Emirates, four in the West Indies) before the three-in-a-row romp against a hapless side.

Still, the margin of the defeats – 143 runs, 83 runs and by eight wickets with more than three overs to spare – were depressingly one-sided, even if it afforded the tens of thousands of cricket-starved fans at the National Stadium almost non-stop celebration from the first match on April 1 to the finale on April 3, ironically, the same day of the triumph over England in 2016 at Eden Gardens courtesy of Carlos Brathwaite’s unforgettable four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes in the last over of the final.

Brathwaite, now installed as the regular captain of the T20 team, wasn’t in Karachi along with many other prominent members of the squad who opted not to travel to Pakistan, no doubt still concerned about the security situation there.

Look, I know this is a matter that infuriates many Pakistani fans who may feel that these players are just a bunch of pampered cowards and that the incidents of violence in the country are few and far between and very much distant from the cricket environment.

But you have to appreciate how these occasional attacks are presented in the Western media and how cricketers, many of them, will feel that they are financially secure enough not to have to take any risks in pursuit of the US$25,000 reportedly offered by CWI to players to participate in those Karachi matches.

This West Indies team skippered by Jason Mohammed is what we refer to in these parts as a “pick-up” side, meaning that you just take on board whoever happens to be standing in the way and available for the trip. As such, nothing can be read into the composition of the squad other than they were prepared to go given the financial incentive and at the urging of an administration required to fulfil a contractual obligation.

No collection of players under the banner of the West Indies should ever be so constituted. Hopefully there will never be such an experience for Pakistan as well.

Add to that the fact that CWI said nothing about the three matches while the Pakistan Cricket Board were providing all the information leading up to the brief series and the abiding impression to Caribbean followers of the game was that this was almost a secretive operation.

While there have been many trials and travails over the past two decades, West Indians are still remembered for the flair, the brilliance and the supreme professionalism they once displayed as a matter of course on the field.

That admiration extends from the Kashmir to Karachi and every other part of the cricketing world.

To see the team presumably representing the people of these tiny territories pulverised from pillar to post begs the question of the purpose of the exercise, other than to give Pakistani fans long-overdue cause for home celebration. At least there was much jubilation because the visitors didn’t offer much of a fight. But then, that’s what sport is supposed to be – a contest. Those three matches at the National Stadium in Karachi certainly weren’t that.

In another matter, there is much relief throughout the region that the West Indies will be at the World Cup next year in England. Not celebration, just relief, because for the two-time World Cup winners to have to go through the qualification event in Zimbabwe was seen as hugely embarrassing here.

They made it, yes, but their performances were hardly convincing. In every single match there were periods of real struggle and of course in the critical fixture against Scotland, Jason Holder’s men benefited from a poor umpiring decision and then torrential rain to sneak a five-run win that confirmed World Cup qualification.

That unconvincing effort, which included three losses to Afghanistan (one in a warm-up match), leaves most West Indian fans with very little expectation for what is to come in just over a year’s time.

I’m glad I waited a day before writing this!

New Delhi, Thursday: Protest-hit Chennai Super Kings were Thursday ordered to play all their remaining Indian Premier League (IPL) home games 1,200 kilometres away in Pune after players had shoes thrown at them and were threatened with snakes being unleashed into their stadium.

Demonstrations marred Chennai’s winning return to the IPL after a two-year ban for corruption on Tuesday night, against Kolkata Knight Riders, and when a threat to unleash snakes followed it prompted the officials to act.

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu state, which has seen volatile protests over the handling of a water-shortage crisis with the authorities saying they could not guarantee security at Super Kings’ matches.

“The IPL governing council assessed the current situation in Chennai and a decision was taken to shift the matches from the MA Chidambaram Stadium to Pune,” a league statement said on Thursday.

That means all of Chennai’s six remaining home games in the cash-rich tournament will be on the other side of India 1,200 kilometres (750 miles) away.

Super Kings all-rounder Shane Watson was among the first to comment.

“Very sad for our team @ChennaiIPL and the fans here in Chennai that we won’t be playing anymore games here this season. The atmosphere last game was incredible. Let’s hope this situation in Tamil Nadu is sorted out asap,” the veteran Australian said on Twitter.

“I trust a ‘peaceful’ resolution is found soon for the problems at hand. Thanks to everyone for making the team so welcome,” said coach Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain. Senior batsman Suresh Raina also took to Twitter to say he would miss “our home ground” and the fans. “You are always in our hearts,” he added in the message. AFP

Kandy remembers sports promoter EW Balasuriya

EW Balasuriya, Kandy’s versatile sportsman, sports benefactor, philanthropic, and above all a gentleman, was remembered on his eighth death anniversary. He died on April 6, 2010.

Balasuriya started his education at Dharmaraja College and later at Ananda College. He excelled at cricket as an opening batsman. During his playing days, he was rated as one of the steady opening bat with an array of strokes. He was known as EW and Bala and was a well-known figure in Kandy and Sri Lanka. He was there to give a hand to every sport, social work and education.

Only those who moved with this great gentleman knew about his other social activities in which he was deeply involved. There was hardly any sporting event in Kandy in which he was not involved in. His pet sports were rugby and cricket. The encouragement he gave to players and clubs by way of financial assistance, advice and guidance is well known to many.

As a donor he was unique and, unlike most others, he was freely available to all sportsmen at any time. He was one-time secretary of the Central Province Cricket Association and later hit the top spot when he organised the first official Test match at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy when Gamini Dissanayake was president of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka. He gave a big hand to Kandy by helping the Municipal Council to build the Mahiyawa Crematorium, and to convert the Bogambara grounds into a stadium in 1972. EW had the gift of making people feel exalted and raised their spirit by a few words of comfort or expression of support. “Don’t worry, you do whatever you like I will give the backing, I am there with you,” were his favourite words. He also gave a big hand to the Dharmaraja College swimming pool project.

In the field of rugby, he is the person who founded the Kandy Lake Club in 1962 and Kandy RFC. EW’s idea of forming this club was to give the unknown ruggerites a chance. He was a great rugby developer. His first rugby side was coached by Maurice Perera, the famous All Ceylon prop forward and coach and Sydney Ratwatte.

He also gave a big hand for cricket and Kandy Lake Club producing top cricket teams and cricketers in the 1960s and making them champions of Central Province. He is no more, but his memory will remain forever in the minds of all those who knew his qualities. He will not be forgotten by the sports-loving public of Kandy.

Doping probe keeps three locals away, no Gold Coast positive tests

XXIst Commonwealth Games

GOLD COAST, Australia (Reuters) - An “intelligence-led” doping probe prevented three Australians and an undisclosed number of other athletes from competing at the Commonwealth Games but no positive tests have been recorded on the Gold Coast to date, organisers said on Thursday.

Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) chief David Sharpe said a preventative task force funded to the tune of millions of dollars by the Australian government had conducted tests on 2,600 local athletes and 500 from overseas.

Sharpe said he was not able to name the three Australian athletes caught cheating by the task force and said the number of athletes from other countries was “less than 20”.

“We’ve seen the scandals over the last 18 months, which is why it was important that we delivered a programme that removes cheats before they arrived at the Games,” Sharpe told a news conference.

“If you don’t, clean athletes might not have their chance to stand on the podium and hear their national anthem.”

Organisers would not disclose the number of tests that were being conducted on the 6,000 athletes at the Games but Sharpe did confirm that there had been no adverse analytical findings.

“I can confirm there have been no positive tests to this date,” he said.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) will follow the lead of the Olympics movement by retaining samples for future testing for the first time in the Gold Coast, said Dr Mani Jegathesan of the Commonwealth Games Medical Commission.

Sharpe, a former policeman, said the intelligence-led approach was a far more efficient way of combating cheating than blanket testing.

“For mine, if we do less tests that are better intelligence-led, we get better results,” he added.

Botswanan former world champion Amantle Montsho, who served a two-year ban after failing a doping test at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, won gold in the women’s 400 metres in the athletics on Wednesday night.

CGF chief David Grevemberg said that despite the encouraging results, there was no room for complacency in the battle against doping.

“This is not a quick fix, this is the most robust that we have been in preparation for a Games but we need now to continue that fight outside Games’ time,” he said.

“Whether that is creating more deterrents or taking more preventative measures to ultimately alter behaviour and let cheats know there is not place for them at the Commonwealth Games.

“We’re absolutely committed to playing a larger role as this continues to move forward.”

England women cricketers trio honoured by Wisden

The cover of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanac 2018

England’s Heather Knight, Natalie Sciver and Anya Shrubsole are among Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year.

Shrubsole also becomes the first woman on the front cover of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.

All three were in the national side, captained by Knight, which beat India in the final to win the 2017 World Cup.

Essex seam bowler Jamie Porter and West Indies batsman Shai Hope complete the list.

Only two women had previously been chosen among Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year, with England’s Claire Taylor included in 2009 and compatriot Charlotte Edwards in 2014.

India captain Virat Kohli was named the leading cricketer in the world, while compatriot Mithali Raj was the world’s leading women’s cricketer.

In a new award, Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan, 19, was declared the leading Twenty20 cricketer.

The coveted awards, which began in 1889, are a central feature of the annual Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.

“It means a huge amount to me personally,” Shrubsole told BBC Sport. “What I feel most about it is it’s just such a great reflection of where women’s cricket is, and also how much that World Cup win really captured the nation.

“You could have put any number of people from that World Cup-winning team on the front cover and it would’ve had exactly the same impact.”

ECB’s handling of Stokes ‘sad’

Wisden editor Lawrence Booth has criticised the England and Wales Cricket Board’s handling of Ben Stokes following an incident in September.

The England and Durham all-rounder was made unavailable for selection for the Ashes in Australia this winter after being accused of fighting outside a Bristol nightclub.

Stokes appeared in court in February charged with affray before joining up again with the England team during their tour of New Zealand.

Stokes denies the charge and a trial date has been set for 6 August.

“To suspend Stokes while he awaited the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service was reasonable enough,” said Booth.

“To lift the suspension the moment he was charged was perverse. It was all so sad.”

The Wisden Five - the editor’s verdict

Booth said Knight lifting the 2017 World Cup helped change women’s cricket forever, adding that her 364 runs at an average of 45 - including a century against Pakistan - were central to England’s success.

Booth was also full of praise for Sciver. He said: “No stroke in 2017 was more memorable than Nat Sciver’s deliberate deflection between her legs, instantly christened the Natmeg.

“But she was more than a one-trick pony. She hit 369 runs in the tournament at an average of 46 and a strike rate of 107, including hundreds against Pakistan and New Zealand, took three for three against West Indies and scored a half-century in the final against India.”

India were 191-3 as they chased 229 for victory before Shrubsole sparked a collapse by taking 5-11.

Shrubsole finished with figures of 6-46 - the best in a World Cup final - and also achieved “the status of a national hero”, added Booth.

Booth said West Indies batsman Hope “produced one of the individual performances of the year”. Hope became the first man in history to score a hundred in both innings of a first-class match at Headingley during the second Test against England.

Porter was the leading wicket-taker in County Championship Division One last season with 75 wickets to “inspire his team” to their first title since 1992. – BBC

XXIst Commonwealth Games

Two Sri Lankan women athletes Nimali Liyanaarachchi and Ganyanthika Abeyratne competing in heat number one and three were complete disappointments for Lankan fans here in Australia who made their way from faraway places of Australia to witness these athletes in action. None of them showed any impressive performances in the women’s 800 metres heats and failed to qualify for a place in the final.

Nimali and Gayanthika who have between them shared the national women’s 800 metres record could finish seventh and eighth respectively in their heats.

Gayanthika trailed behind the lead pack for the entire race and finished with a time of 2:04.72 which was far below her personal best of 2:02.55 which is the current national record for the event.

The winner of the heat Caster Semanya of South Africa who is a favourite for the gold clocked 1:59.26.

Nimali also suffered the same fate as her team mate failing to keep pace with the rest of the field and finished with a time of 2:08.52. Kenya’s Emily Cherotich Tuei won the heat with a time of 2:00.58.

In fact the two Lankans were unable to achieve their personal best during the heats which can be considered one of most disappointing performances. Gayanthika speaking after the event said that she was not satisfied with her own performance and noted that up to around the 600 meters mark she was keeping well but soon felt the heat as the other runners piled on the pressure.

She said that she would in future concentrate on running in the 200 metres for the forthcoming Asian Games.

Sri Lanka’ only competitor for the this event Anna-Marie Ondaatje who did well last night to aggregate a total of 44.300 in the Individual All-Round Final is set to continue her best form during the ongoing events scheduled for the evening at the same venue.

Wolves win to move within two points of Premier League

LONDON, Thursday - A wonder goal from Ruben Neves helped power Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers to a 2-0 victory over Derby County at Molineux on Wednesday that pushes them to the brink of earning Premier League football next season.

The Portuguese international Neves scored an astonishing dipping 51st minute volley from 30 metres out to seal the win that puts Wolves 11 points clear at the top of England’s second-tier standings.

Diogo Jota, another of Wolves’ Portuguese contingent, had struck after six minutes to launch the leaders towards a win that leaves them two points from sealing promotion, mathematically, to the Premier League after a six-year absence.

They could seal top flight football by beating their Midlands rivals Birmingham City on Sunday at their Molineux fortress.

Yet if second-placed Fulham fail to beat Brentford at home on Saturday, Wolves could even be celebrating promotion 24 hours before that match.

Nuno Santo’s entertaining Wolves side have enjoyed a special season but their fans had seen nothing to top the strike from Neves, who controlled a Derby clearance, flicked up the ball and unleashed an unstoppable volley.

The win moved Wolves on to 92 points from 42 games, 11 clear of Fulham, who currently hold the other automatic promotion place by a point from Cardiff City, who have a game in hand.

Derby’s own promotion push was dented as they stand fifth among the playoff places on 68 points.

13 African athletes go missing at Commonwealth Games

GOLD COAST, Thursday - Five more African athletes may have vanished from the Commonwealth Games, organisers said Thursday, after eight competitors from Cameroon were suspected of fleeing a day earlier.

Gold Coast organisers confirmed reports that athletes from Rwanda and Uganda were thought to have gone missing, while they were also looking to verify the whereabouts of two squash players from Sierra Leone.

“We’re obviously looking at it very carefully,” Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive David Grevemberg told reporters.

“We have a service to people who have legitimate visas to be in this country,” he added.

“Until it becomes a true issue and somebody has outstayed their visa, or have formally applied for asylum, we just need to continue to monitor the situations.

“The focus now is to support teams in trying to track down the athletes who are missing.”

More than 100 athletes overstayed their visas at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Athlete visas for the Commonwealth Games expire on May 15, Grevemberg said. Eight athletes from conflict-hit Cameroon -- one third of the central African country’s 24-strong team -- were said to be missing from the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, sparking an Australian Border Force manhunt. As the search continues for Cameroon’s five boxers and three weightlifters, Grevemberg insisted the welfare of the athletes came first.

“We obviously have been in close contact with Cameroon officials,” he said.

“We share their concern regarding obviously the safety, welfare, whereabouts of these athletes.”

Cameroon team manager Victor Agbor Nso told local media he had reported the matter to police on Wednesday.

Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton warned that athletes would be forcibly removed from the country if they attempted to overstay their visas.

“They aren’t going to game the system,” he told local radio.

“Australian Border Force officers will find these people (and) they’ll be held in immigration detention until they can be deported.” – AFP

Virat Kohli, who became the leading run-getter of Indian Premier League on Tuesday, talked about how AB de Villiers inadvertently helped him in the recently concluded Test series against South Africa.

In an exclusive chat with NDTV, Kohli said, “I actually learnt something from him in the recent Test series that we played. I made that adjustment to my game, which I haven’t told him about yet.”

Kohli became the first India captain to win a bilateral series in South Africa. After losing the Test series 1-2, Kohli’s team crushed South Africa to win the One-day International series 5-1 and then clinched the Twenty20 International series 2-1 to end the tour on a high.

The Indian captain also opened up on his county stint ahead of India tour of England and said, “People have their personal opinions and I respect that. But I have to do what is best for my preparation going forward.”

Kohli will miss the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June and focus solely on the England tour (from late June to September) where the Indian team will play a five-Test series, three T20Is and a three-match ODI series.

While it is yet to be ascertained which county Kohli will represent, it could be Surrey in all likelihood.

He will leave for England after completing his assignment for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Kohli went past Suresh Raina on Tuesday to become IPL’s leading run-getter. Kohli needed 31 runs to catch up with Raina during the match with Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium and crossed the figure in the ninth over. He made unbeaten 92 against Mumbai but couldn’t help his team go over the line and lost the match by 46 runs.

Kohli’s teammate De Villiers also showered praise on the Indian team and said that they were more challenging than Australia in the Test series. – NDTV

Make BCCI an answerable Public Body

$

Law Commission tells Govt.

NEW DELHI, Wednesday: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should be brought under the ambit of the RTI Act, the Law Commission said today noting that it falls under the definition of a public authority which has received substantial financing from governments.

It also said non-consideration of the role played by the BCCI as “monopolistic” in the regulation of the game of cricket has resulted in the board “flying under the radar of public scrutiny, encouraged an environment of opacity and non-accountability”.

In July 2016, the Supreme Court had asked the commission to recommend whether the cricket board can be brought under the Right to Information Act. There have been demands to bring the cash-rich cricket body under RTI to usher in transparency.

The report, submitted to the Law Ministry today, states that BCCI ought to be classified as ‘state’ within the meaning of Article 12 of the Constitution.

“An analysis of the functioning of BCCI also shows that the government does exercise control over its activities and functioning.

“... BCCI, falling in line with the foreign policy of India, did not recognize a player from South Africa due to their practice of apartheid; and that the cricket matches between India and Pakistan in view of tense international relations were made subject to government approval. The foregoing positions BCCI as a limb of the state’,” the law panel report said.

It said though the BCCI is continued to be regarded as a “private body”, owing to its “monopolistic character coupled with the public nature of its functions, it can still be termed as a ‘public authority’ and be brought within the purview of the RTI Act.

The report pointed out that BCCI has received “substantial financing” from appropriate governments in the form of tax exemptions and land grants.

The BCCI has enjoyed tax exemptions of “thousands of crores”, the report said. “To be precise, between 1997-2007, the total tax exemption amounted to Rs twenty-one billion six hundred eighty-three million two hundred thirty-seven thousand four hundred eighty-nine. It may also be noted here that from 2007-2008 onwards, the registration of BCCI under section 12A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, as a charitable trust, was withdrawn,” it noted.

The BCCI, it said, exercises state-like’ powers affecting the fundamental rights of the stakeholders, guaranteed (in) the Constitution. It is hereby recommended that the BCCI be viewed as an agency or instrumentality of state, under Article 12 of the Constitution, thereby making it amenable to the writ jurisdiction of the Supreme Court under Article 32,” the report said.

It noted that human rights are sacrosanct and innately associated with the human personality. These rights...are to be respected by, and can be enforced against not only the state’ but also private entities.

Therefore, the BCCI should be held accountable, under all circumstances, for any violations of basic human rights of the stakeholders, the report said.

To support its case further, the law panel said the uniform Indian team wears contains the national colours and their helmets display the Ashok Chakra.

“BCCI, though not a national sports federation, nominates cricketers for the Arjuna Awards. Parliament and state legislatures chose not to enact a legislation to govern the sport of cricket reflecting tacit recognition on the issue afforded to BCCI,” it said.

The panel is of the view that the BCCI virtually acts as a national sports federation.

It said the BCCI’s memorandum of association states that the Board’s objects and purposes are to control, improve quality, lay down policies pertaining to the game of cricket in India as well as select teams to represent India at international fora.

“Moreover, as per the statement made in the Lok Sabha, the central government has already been regarding BCCI as a national sports federation... since all other sports bodies which are listed as NSFs are covered under the RTI Act, it is inconceivable as to why BCCI should be an exception,” it said. Manila: World champion Lucas Matthysse on Wednesday vowed a fight "to the death" in his July title defence against Manny Pacquiao, calling the Philippine boxing star "past his prime".

But the 35-year-old Argentine -- who took the vacant World Boxing Association welterweight title in January -- said it was still a "dream-come-true" and "an honour" to face Pacquiao, winner of eight unprecedented world titles in different weight classes.

"Obviously he is still a very great fighter but since the knockout of Marquez, I think he is not the same fighter anymore," Matthysse said at a joint news conference in Manila, referring to the Filipino's sensational 2012 knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez.

Pacquiao, 39, will fight Matthysse for the WBA welterweight belt on July 15 in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur. AFP
